Mr Buxtons thread has stirred me into pondering why I haven't made a folder yet
Been making fixed blades for over 6yrs and never tried one.
Are they really hard to make???
Where is the best place to learn???

For linner locks Ray Roger's tutorial, for slip joints Chris Crawford's tutorial on the Knife Network.

They can be intimidating, but there not hard once you do a couple. They do require more mechanicle type work, precision holes and keep everything flat. They can be quite consuming too!

Good luck, and the best thing to do is dive right in!

shoot if I can make one, anyone can. Just take your time and pay attention to the tutorials. Ray Rogers or Jason Howells tutorials is all you need. 1 word of advice, don't rush, take your time and think about what your doing before you drill or grind. I can't wait to start another one, hopefully soon.

Another thing, study what screws, pivot and stop pins your planning on using and be sure to order the correct clearance and tap drill bits, along with the right drill bits and reamers for your stop and pivot pins, and don't forget the taps. I ordered all this stuff and had it all in front of me before I started, I didn't want to get a good start and then have to stop and wait for a certain tool or something to be shipped to me.. Plan ahead. I ordered enough stuff to do 10 liner locks, figured it was easier that way and now I can mess up something and still have an extra. ;)

have fun,

Bill

I'm planning on starting with a lockback or slipjoint so I picked up one of those lockback kits at a show. From what I hear alot of folks learn from either playing with kits to help figure things out or taking apart old knives. I figure between the tutorials, two books on order and the kit I can make something sharp that swings in the middle.......can't guarantee much else though.
