Feather Patterm Damascus: Pros and Cons?

I have seen some beautiful knives made with so-called "Feather Pattern" Damascus.

I know that a lot of low-quality knives come out of Pakistan and are offered on e-bay. However, my question is about the forging technique itself.

Given quality steel and competent forging technique; is there any down side to a feather pattern billet or a blade made from one?

Aside from the striking appearance, what are the pros and cons?

Well feathers aren't nearly as strong as steel, so that right there is a negative.
