Here are some pictures of the most advanced Damascus I've ever done, W Feather Pattern, I just finished it yesterday. The Damascus is made out of 1084 and 15N20. Thanks for looking, Kyle Royer.

very impressive Kyle...and you're only 17!!! i'll be watching you progress in your field. i see nothing but greatness coming out of your shop. keep it up. :)

Can you tell us more about this beautiful pattern, how many layers, thickness of the billet etc? Thanks.

The peace in the above picture is 1 3/8" wide 1/4" thick and 12" long, there are 2,900 layers in the hole billet, in each inch of the billet there are 242 layers.

The way I make the pattern is I start out with 26 pieces of steel 1 1/4" x 1/8" x 6", half of them are 1084 and the other half are 15N20, 15N20 is the same as 1075 but it has nickel in it which gives it that high contrast in the Damascus. Then I weld and draw out the billet on a bias 90 degrees until it is 30" long, let it cool grind all the scale off and cut it into 7 pieces, stack, weld and draw out in the forge to about 1 1/4" x 3/8" x 20" let it cool then cut it up so each piece is 1 1/4" long, you will have about 16 pieces, stack it after grinning all the scale off and you should have about a 6" tall billet, weld the billet in the forge and press it down in the hydraulic press until it is about 5" and 3/8" thick tall, it is used for smashing the Feather Pattern into the Damascus. Now you have to make sure that all the little "W"s that you created by forging the billet on a bias 90 degrees are facing you, then I made a die for my press that is 5" long and I press it through the billet standing up then take the two pieces and grind the scale off, then weld them back together in the forge just the way they were before you split the billet. Draw the billet out VERY carefully so you wont distort the pattern and your done.

I am taking custom orders for this pattern and others.

Thanks,
Kyle
