Federal Duck Stamp?

Greetings.

Earlier this week I bought from the Bay what was thought to be (by the seller) one of the Ducks Unlimited series of knives. However, I believed it to be one of the limited edition Federal Duck Stamp knives. It was difficult to see the shield in the eBay photos and I didn’t want to waste time emailing questions back and forth with seller and risk losing knife in the interim so I just jumped on it at what I thought was a bargain price.

I received the knife today. She took my breath away. However, after searching all of the catalogs found on Collectors-of-Schrades (thanks again for that site Larry) I was unable to find the knife. I found a number of other patterns and associated boxes used for the Federal Duck Stamp commemoratives throughout the years. I would like to know what year this knife was produced and if there was a box produced along with it for display. Any other information on this knife, or the relationship between Schrade and the Dept. of Interior, would be helpful and interesting.

Best, Tony

Tony,
I can't answer any of your questions. Sorry. But you have a great looking knife there! Nice snag!

The first Schrade Duck Stamp issue was in 1984, the 50th anniversary of the first Federal Duck Stamp, designed by Jay "Ding" Darling in 1934. I don't have an illustration of this one, but it was two mallard ducks landing on a pond. A couple of years went by before they began making them as a current annual series.

Michael ... you wrote "152" ... it's a "156" pattern, no? The Little Finger. And thanks for the quote from Codger and the link. It's a start. Thanks too Dave, for the compliment.

Brady806 wrote "152", but it is a 156 pattern. Most of these can be found in the reproductions of the factory flyers and catalogs on the collectors-of-schrades-r.us site for dating.

Michael :)

First, you are right Codger (Michael), it was Brady that ID'd the knife as a 152. I misread his post and thought his name was Michael.

I looked at (I think) every catalog and flyer on the C-o-S site that would have this Federal Duck Stamp commemorative knife and came up empty (as it relates to Little Finger.) I did see many Little Fingers ... with Delrin and even Scrimshaw handles ... but none with the wooden handles and duck shield as pictured.

sorry city, your right, what was i thinking???----nice 156,156,156!!!!!!!!!!!!oldtimers moment i guess-ha.
hey micheal, glad to "see ya"--------------brady

Its always good to have Michael around.
The Federal Duck Stamp knives were designated "DS" and a number.
The first I have is DS2 in 1988 is a 94 with a gut hook.
I'm still looking for the 156 But so far all have wooden handles and the same emblem in the handle.

I am missing a picture of 1 DS knife from 1987 - 2002 Its the DS13 and I do not have a 156 pattern in any of them. So by default Im guessing yours is a DS13 and was made in 1999. with a few more made in 00 and 01.

I'll keep looking for the missing knife.
Well I was all wrong.
The DS13 is a fixed blade but not the 156 see attached. Ok I'll keep looking.

Irv, I appreciate your detective skills. Thanks.

By the way, some of the literature that I reviewed on Collectors-of-Schrades indicates that these knives are numbered. There is no number on mine. Is your 1988 DS2 numbered Irv? Others?

I pulled together all I could find on the Federal Duck Stamps and published on my site. If I ever have a few weeks I'll work on the Ducks unlimited.

I do not know if the DS17 was ever released in 2004.

Tony,
I'm concerned that your knife is unfinished. It may have been a proto or something put together as an end of days knife but I do not see it being advertised. Bet it would have been a good seller.

Larry, your recent addition to the Collectors of Schrades website containing information associated with the Federal Duck Stamp commemorative knives was a significant addition to an already amazing body of work. I can’t thank you enough. As a newbie, the site has been a tremendous help.

As far as my knife goes, I remain puzzled. I would like to think that because of the Schrade+ USA Ltd. tang stamp that it was fabricated along with only a few others for consideration as one of the annual commemoratives, but for some reason never made the cut. Actually I’m sure I read somewhere ;) that this particular knife, my knife, was sent to and examined by then Sec’t of the Interior (who administers the Federal Duck Stamp program) Bruce Babbitt sometime in 1997 along with the DS11. The DS11 (see link below) won out since, as you would’ve guessed during the Clinton administration, size mattered. The DS11 I believe is actually a modified 162UH which has the same handle style as the Little Finger (hence the same Goncalo Alves handles on both my knife and the DS11) but a longer blade. The article went on to state ;) that although the DS11 was selected, Mr. Babbitt kept this particular knife, my knife, and eventually gave it to then President Clinton. :jerkit:

One thing I learned from reading Mr. Levine’s thread was to “buy the knife, not the story.” We do have wild imaginations, don’t we?

Any additional (non-fabricated) information on my knife would be appreciated.
