Feds delay policy to allow small knives on planes

I'm not the least bit surprised. Everybody's been emasculated since 9/11 and is terrified to the point of having a heart attack about anything getting on airplanes. Because of everybody being such sissies and terrified of their own shadow there's little to no chance of knives of any sort being allowed on airlines ever again.

If...IF...IF a person of ill intent is unable to gain access to the cockpit...does it matter very much? I don't know.

I'm sure they'll blame it on the sequester. They do everything else.

I was telling my GF about the rule change and she thought it went into effect already, she's been through the airport 3 to 4 times with a Spyderco Bug on a necklace without a problem in the last 2 months.

um... i'm sort of... glad?

i don't see any reason to bring my knives onto a plane, and it sorta worries me to think that some people do. i think it was probably "postponed" because much of the general populace would agree.

and for anybody who carries a knife for self defense, you wouldn't need one on a plane if nobly else had one... this isn't a "fight fire with fire" type situation.

i hope i don't get yelled at too badly for that.

Yup. Killed about 20 thugs with this back in the day. Don't feel safe without it.

That kind of mentality is why the knives on plane idea is more or less getting cancelled. People who think such just can't seem to comprehend the concept that a swiss army knife is NOT a weapon and poses little to no danger to anyone. They're conditioned to be like soft serve ice cream and shy away from anything that those in charge say is bad or wrong. Heaven help up when this soft serve generation is finally convinced to adopt the same attitude with regard to their constitutional rights.

Up until two years ago you could walk through security in a certain european airport, order steak and get given a proper steak knife.

Most countries in Europe, not including England where they confiscate anything with a slightly pointy edge and put it in a big plastic container, think these laws are dumb and let you take your nail clippers, tweezers and swiss army knifes on the plane. Anything bigger you'll probably have it confiscated, but they kindly offer to post it to you in most countries. Realistically if you're determined to kill someone on an aeroplane you could use a pen, smashed glass or any number of other objects that would actually work, unlike a classic SAK or a pair of tweezers.

I think these laws are to see how far they can push it before people say enough is enough. I'm surprised we're not all hand and ankle cuffed to our seats yet.

You can't take your own drink, you have to buy one from us for 10 times it's cost once you pass security. Take your shoes, belt and jacket off. We're going to take a photo of you that lets us see you like you're naked. We have to confiscate your tweezers. We have to remove everything then badly repack your bag. We're going to biometrically scan your face and embed the information into a broadcasting chip in your passport. We'd like your fingerprint. If you'd like to pass security faster we'd like your retina scan.

Maybe they should focus on their own security. If you can't get in the cockpit a phone is right now a hell of a lot more dangerous than any knife could ever be.

You may change your mind when you read about the accounts of those struggling to free the life boat from the sinking stricken plane on the Hudson river after being forced to ditch. The sinking plane was threatening to pull the lifeboat with it because nobody had a knife to cut it. Thankfully one of the rescue team members could toss them a knife on time to cut free from the plane or there could have been alot of people in the ice cold water of the river.

I would but it would just be piling on. I'll just ask you one simple question. If the folks aboard the hijacked aircraft on 9-11 had known what was in store for them and had been issued box cutters as they boarded, do you think it would have happened?

When the heck are we going to realize it's not the tool, be it pressure cooker, knife or even gun; it's the human. Profiling might not be politically correct but its the logical thing to do.

You think they haven't already adopted this attitude?
