Hi all, looking for hoof lubricant which is what I guess is the suggestion for caring for horn handles. I live in Hoboken NJ about 10 minutes outside Manhattan, and there aren't any feed and grain stores around here. Hell, I've never seen a feed and grain store in my life

Anyway, I know it's a long shot, but I'm wondering if anybody knows of a website or even has the number of a mail order catalog I could buy from.

Oh yeah, just got a digicam so here are some pics of my khuks (not the greatest, but I'm still learning how to use the darn thing): http://www.followski.com/knives/kuks.html

And only 2 weeks ago too...that's what I get for not paying attention as I should

Thanks irregular!

I think that most of those hoof lubes have lanolin (you know, the stuff sheep use for hair dressing) as their basic component. If so, then any drugstore can supply skin care products that will serve as well...one that occurs is some nasty smelling stuff called "A&D Ointment" which is nearly pure lanolin, as I recall.
I've relied so far for handle care on paste wax and silicone oil, but when this heating season began, one of my knives re-opened an old crack, so a more aggressive and less pleasant regimen of care seems to be indicated. I hate to have my khuks smell of 'salve', but I like split handles even less.

Gunhou,
If you think that smells bad, you haven't been around sheep much. Nothing like the woolies on a hot day.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I did a search on that url in this forum and read the 2 other threads that popped up. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think a khuk should smell like hand cream...it should smell like shoe polish, neatsfoot oil, tuff-glide, and other manly smells
biggrin.gif
And whatever hoof lubricant smells like -- I'm assuming it has a similar smell. Plus, the printout Uncle sent with the khuk says hoof lubricant, so I'll have to do what the man says!

Thanks for the great forum, too. In the past few days a few of the other forums have been ruled by flames, and I reckon that in the 5 months or so I've been lurking and posting on BFC I've never seen any flames here in the HI forum. You folks all seem real friendly and I've learned alot just by reading, expecially on some of the posts that deal with other weapons in the similar style. Keep up the great posts all, there are probably more lurkers than me learning from all your discussions

Thanks for the help again, all. Went with http://equinediscount.com , as they allow you to buy just 28 oz. of hooflex -- petvet had a minimum of $15 purchase, and there's no way I'm buying a gallon of this stuff!

Ski: I agree that khuks should not smell like hand oil.

On the other hand I read somewhere that katanas were treated with choji oil ( clove oil - used to treat toothaches ) that I later found out was mixed with mineral oil. By that time I'd found out how powerful unadulterated clove oil was, so in looking around I saw a nearly full bottle of Kama Sutra oil, topped it off with a couple teaspoons of clove oil, and slathered the blades, handles, and scabbards of some of my khuks. So far it seems to work, and ooh does that smell set off those special khuks. Haven't found anyone yet who picked up one of my khuks treated with "Choji Sutra" oil who didn't find it enhanced the experience. Kind of says, hey, these things deserve the treatment.

Little Bro I saw on the kriscutlery
website that they had some real Camelia Oil and of course the supply is limited.
I didn't think about maybe some one wanting it for their khukuri's let alone the katana's.

So this post will let everyone know about it anyway.

There was also another type oil IIRC, not the same, but much less costly. The scented oil is also used on the Keris. I think Sandlewood was the prefered pretty smelling oil for them.

Reminds me of the time I bought some black patent leather cowboy boots. I saw them in the store, started to write them off as "Liberace" type boots, and then stopped dead when a bell in my head rang, saying "NO POLISHING EVER!!!"

Some gals complimented me on them, but no guy ever said a word even after I quit wearing them with the nickeled 4" mod 29 44 mag. There's something about the choji sutra oil that whispers to people "...if he goes to this length in oiling it, guess how sharp he keeps it."

Well to continue with the topic drift,

did the strops help with keeping your knives sharper than before?
Maybe one day this next week I can get Dave K's strops in the mail to him, gonna really try anyway. I have just been too lazy to make myself another green chrome strop since using Dave's is easier.

There have been a lot of oils and preservatives used on horn and stag handles. I think someone mentioned using Jojoba Oil and has good luck with it.
Te lanolin based products being of animal origin may be the best though. You sure wouldn't want to use any petroleum based products on natural materials imo.

Rusty, it sounds like a good idea -- I just don't know if I'm that close to my khuk yet!
