So I want to create some knife patterns that become some of my standard 'models' and here are the first 3 I have come up with.

Bushcraft style: The top one is based on a Old Hickory mod I did for a bushcraft style knife so I used it for a reference for size. The cutting edge is 3 1/2" & the handle is 4 5/8", OAL is 8 3/8".

Nessmuk style: The middle one is based on the time tested Nessmuk pattern, as I've always been fond of them. It's a good shape for outdoor use & the belly makes for a fair skinner. The cutting edge is 3 7/8", the handle is 4 1/2", & OAL is 8 1/2".

Sheepsfoot fixed blade: The bottom is a fixed blade sheepsfoot. I wanted to design a knife that I could get 2 blanks from per foot of stock & always wanted a sturdy fixed blade sheepsfoot & came up with this design. It has a 2" cutting edge, 4" handle, and 6" OAL & has jimping & a radiused relief for the thumb for whittling.

Please offer any feedback you like. On the sheepsfoot, am I making the blade to wide?

Thanks for looking & any feedback you may provide.

Thanks Tinker. I had to break out several French curves from my old board drafting equipment to draw that one up. I miss manual or board drafting, there was more art to it than CAD.

Your Nessmuk design is very appealing. I keep reading how useful they are and was looking at pictures of them yesterday.

I will gladly test a prototype. All joking aside those look like great patterns. Bring them to life.

The first design is too "stiff". It needs a little curve along the spine and blade. I would also use a better shaped handle on it. The handle on the Nessmuk would work fine here.
The Nessmuk is OK if you are using it strictly for hunting/skinning and such. The shape isn't as useful for general tasks.
The Warncliffe/Sheepsfoot blade is too wide. You don't want it to drop below the handle line. It would be a good line and rigging knife.

The warncliffe is derived from the sheepsfoot as an improvement over the sheepsfoot for carving . I would call yours a sheepsfoot . In any case the blade is rather short .Extend the blade 50 % longer and you'll have a proper warncliffe. Make the handles to fit you . In the old days people often made tool handles themselves and they kept patterns for various tool handles.

The Nesmuk looks cool and besides skinning/dressing game would be good for all kinds of food prep. I regret the choil on my small EDC knife because it can hang on rope, packing or cloth (or a seat belt for example) when you try to rip it. Other than stylistic do they really have a purpose?

I really like how you make your designs easy to steal though. :)

I personally like them on some knives because you can sharpen the blade easily whereas some production knives I own the steel tapers out wider from the edge to where the plunge is.

Although these are my original drawings, they were influenced by other knives. The top one was traced from an Old Hickory then I changed the handle profile and cut down the blade as a Kephart style mod.

Here's the Old Hick mod me and my step son did for his dad for last Christmas.

The only one I haven't really seen is the last one but that is likely because the blade is probably too wide and could be a bit longer. I'll probably still build one and tweak it some. I just thought some may like a short fixed blade with a full size handle. I will make one for the shop if nothing else.

If people copy my knives I'll be happy because that means they probably like my work/designs. I mean I've gotten tons of my influence from the forums, YouTube, and the internet. When I get to a point where I'm copied, I'll be stoked. Imitation is the best form of flattery, no?
