I've never owned one, my local Wal-mart has 1 left on clearance for $40.00, regular rubber handles and 420HC blade. I played with it and it opens REAL smooth, but I was hoping ot get some opinions from those that own them.

Any good and is $40.00 a fair price?

yes on both counts! i have one and if my father in law were to take me hunting i would carry it with!

 ...TLC if you're talking about the 279 I love it...Like Dave said it's smooth as silk to open and close and mine locks up rock solid. If you're talking about the 270 ...same thing. It's a bit smaller and really nice but I like the size of the 279 for serious outdoor stuff...Either way I think you'll love it and $40 for the 270 or the 279 is a nice price...The 270 I do like to carry around more as an EDC than the larger one though.

Hay Reb....or...a TLC,

At $40.00 you should go ahead and buy it. You will not be sorry; It's a great knife. My comments are the same as what the others have said.....opens smoooth, fits good in the hand, and has a good ergo feel when in use. If you get it and don't like it.....well.....one of us will buy it from you on the exchange ;) :) .

My wife and I like ours!
I have the walnut one though, she has the camo handled one. Great knives!
Smooth opening, sturdy, and sharp!
What more could ya want :D

TLC, I really like the 279. I have a woody one.
It's a great knife. The only reason I don't EDC it is because I don't have a spare.
Mine has some blade wobble.
Keep saying I am going to send it in, but I am the king of "tomorrow".

Still a great knife and for $40...get it.

Blade wobble? Can't that be adjusted with a hex or torx wrench?

I think the Alpha folders are terrific. I like the fact they can be opened with a flick of the wrist. (unless you over-tighten the blade)

They are built like a tank.

Thanks Dan...I tried to torx it. Started to strip the head...screwed tight. Still had/has the wobbles.

Well, I bought an Alpha Hunter tonight, just not the one at Wal-Mart. That one was a 279 with black rubber handles and 420HC blade. I've been debating about going to get it since it was $40.00, but tonight at the mall I went into K's Merchandise and they are still having their going out of business sale. In the Sporting Goods counter I found 1 left of the 277 with nice wood handles and the ATS-34 blade and with the "final clearance" markdown it was................$45.00.

I guess that extra $5.00 was worth it? :D

...Great job scoutin' that one out TLC...If ya don't now...yer gonna be luvin' it shortly...It is one super knife...

Um, well, YEAH it was worth it!!!!
You will love that baby! Give us a report once you "break it in"

I am already impressed with how smoooooth it opens! It's amazingly slick for such a big folder!

Alright TLC,

Come on post a pic for us all to see. I love those wood scale's. Tell what wood scale's walnut or rosewood?

A little dark here now, will try to get one up in the morning. They look like Rosewood to me, they are a reddish brown color, sorta reminds me of Cocobolo????

I wanna see a pic (love your pics)...in the interim:
Is it like one of the Alpha knives on page 2 of my link below TLC?

I'll let you folks decide, are these Rosewood or Walnut?

If its a 277 and it has a ATS-34 blade it would have to be the rosewood model.

I dont remember if the Walnut even came with the blade upgrade...
They also have a different model #!

Nice score, and beautiful pictures!!!! Enjoy using it!!!

Hi TLC,

Jim is right on!!!! That rosewood 277 is very nice. When I bought my first Alpha folder off ebay the auction was for the same model as yours. However, the seller sent me the walnut 279. I was disappointed but kept it anyway and it is now part of my deer hunting gear :) . Congrats on your new family member ;) .

Here is a scan of my latest 279's.
