Fehrman. Coated or Satin?

Can't take it anymore. This Busseholic is gonna finally spring for three Fehrmans. Merry Christmas to me. A Final Judgement, First Strike, and a Last Chance. Coated or Satin? That is the question? The Satin looks more like bead blasted, ( double cut on Busse's), on the Ferhman's W/S.
They state that S3V is more prone to rust.
Anyway. Anyone out there with Ferhman "finish" experience, both ways, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

coated is always better for protection against rust, but I really like satin, so if I got one, I would go with satin and keep the finish coated with a rust inhibitor.

I like mine with the coating, mine is developing some excellent use marks and wear in the coating. The satin is very nice as well though.

I had a coated one, but have always liked naked blades. I would mix them up. One coated, and two not, or some combination. But be sure to report back as to how they looked, satin or bead blasted. :)

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year

I got my eye on a Fehrman peace Maker.I might go coated if I can't find someone who can Duracote it CADPAT.I live and play in a damp sometimes salty climate.

I have a Fehrman with the black 'epoxy' coating. I don't like it that much appearance-wise. As one witty poster noted, it is reminiscent of a spray-on bedliner. However it doesn't really concern me since I didn't buy the knife for looks. If I had my druthers I would have preferred DLC or ti-ni, but they don't offer it.

I would be interested to hear any comments on how durable and functional this kind of finish is.

Will get back to you with a report when I decide, order, get, and abuse the equipment. Thanks all. for your input and comments.

Cutterman,
Just saw your post, the satin finish knives are no longer bead blasted! They are hand finished with a fine paper (400 grit). We have found that bead blasting tends to open up the pores of the steel (no matter what type) and makes it easier for corrosion to take place. For some people it doesn't become an issue, for others who don't keep up with their bare steel blades it may be. The fine paper finish does tend to close up the micoscopic pores of the steel and gives better corrosion resistance, especially if proper care is taken. Our coated knives have a black crinkle powder coating which is of course the lower maintence option (like anything else it won't fool proof neglect). Hope this helps, Have a good Christmas!

Jay - Thanks for the post. You are right about the bead blast finish. I bet the satin finish looks awesome. Does your website show the satin finish??

Mr. Fehrman. It is nice to see you posting here and answering user questions. Nothing builds up strong customer loyalties like a little bit of face time and personal touch. I've been interested in your knives for a while now as well. Have a happy holiday season!

Mr. Fehrman,
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. When the Boss responds, it's a good indicator of true character. I have found many fine people on these forums, and you're right up there with the best. I am now in decision mode, and my order will be forthcoming soon.
May you, and your family have a blessed Christmas, and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year.

Attached is a photo of a Fehrman HH10 with satin finish. I'm paranoid about corrosion so I use Marine Tuf Cloth.

I like it. I almost sold this knife and still can't figure out why.

Guys, Cutterman,
I'm not the boss!!! Eric heads up the knife and tomahawk lines. I'm just one of the guys out on the floor that gets to bring the designs to life. It's pretty cool to be able to make knives and hawks that we can put in someone's hand to use and enjoy. We try hard to make good quality products that fills a need for real life users. We've been blessed to have a lot of guys and gals that are satisfied customers! As far as what is shown on our web site (without looking) I believe some of the pics do show the old bead blasted finish - I'm definitely not a techie but I do know keeping up with a web sight can be time consuming and easy to neglect. I'll talk to Eric & Andy about noting any pics that show the original bead blasted finish. Maybe they can do that when they add some of the new projects - a new 2 finger neck knife, a double bladed tomahawk (hatchet), and we currently processing the ATC Comanche... Keep EM Sharp.

Moloko i have one of the original runs of the knife and i would never get rid of it. one of the best all around large knives in production.

You can't go wrong with Fehrmans. In my opinion with Fällkniven and Extrema Ratio the best production knives. I have Fehrmans with coated blades for practical reasons (better rust-resistance), but I would like to have the ones with satin blades as well. Some similarities with Busses though. I don't know if Fehrmans are just as tough as Busses, but in practice the knives are awesome to handle. I even find Fehrmans a bit better in terms of ergonomics, blade finish (just perfect) and appearance compared with the Busses I've handled so far. But I am still waiting for my new NMSFNO, so Busse might convince me otherwise.

Got my Fehrman FJ, FS, and LC on Monday. Decided on the black blades. This Busseholic is mighty impressed. They look, balance, feel, and handle beautifully. They are way more than a worthy addition to my collection of knives. The kydex sheaths are okay. The FJ sheath is way to tight, and an E has gone out to Fehrman. A small problem indeed. Anyone out threre considering a Fehrman puchase? DO NOT HESITATE! I think you will be really happy. Fit, finish, handle, GREAT!
I love the FJ, and FS, but the "Last Chance" is the KILLER for me. Big enough for most all realistic knife uses. I simply love the size, heft, balance, look, and feel of the thing. So much so, I'm gonna order another black, for the bug out bag, and a satin for fun. Try one. You'll love it I'm sure.
Sorry, no Pics. Cameras down and out ( dropped it ), but they do look the same as they do on the website.
A-Plus Fehrman family.

Congratulations on your new Fehrmans.

They are really nice knives. I’ve seen mediocre reactions to some other ‘hard use’ knives, but never to a Fehrman. Guys get that glazed over look in their eyes and start talking in hushed reverent tones, or they get giddy, sometimes one followed by the other. It’s funny to watch.

I have several really nice knives, including some very impressive folders, that elicit strong reactions from guys, but few cause as much emotion as my Fehrman. The fit, finish, design and ergonomics are so well executed on them.

The blade shapes are very unique and it makes one wonder why others don’t utilize this design. They work absolutely great in the field.

One of the best kept secrets in the industry right now.

Thanks Bearcut, and all of you guys. Placing a new order tonight or tomorrow. Just thinkin on which and what. Cut on everybody.
