And, the inner pouch bag to hold it all.

Got a friend that was an arctic survival instructor for post-BUD/S SEALs on Kodiak. His choice of blades: Fehrman Last Chance.
Got two LC's and a Thru-Hiker, Fehrmans are simply the best.

My first Fehrman was the LC.
The workmanship, F&F and design blew me away. Their heat treat on CPM 3V helped me understand what modern supersteels are really capable of.

I now own a Thru-hiker, Peacemaker, Last Chance and Final Judgement.

The other kit I am putting together is a Ron Hood/TOPS Hoodlum, with a piggyback Fehrman Thru-Hiker.
The Hoodlum steel is 5160, which is very tough, but isn't as good as Fehrmans 3V overall. The design of the Hoodlum is excellent though, possibly the best bush knife design I've ever used.

Now if I can just get Eric to build a similar design in 3V...

Wow a thread all about Fehrmans when I'm considering buying one... providence?

What's the final judgement like in terms of performance? Chopping and batoning? How does the handle feel after hard use?

I've got a few Fehrmans and they are really top-notch knives...I love their 3V!

I'm interested in how your Hoodlum turns out; I'm on the pre-order wait list and really looking forward to getting my paws on in. Do you have an aftermarket sheath for it?

bearcuts choice in knives is excellent. however more credit is due to the versatile light weight survival kit. i beleive it represents quite a bit of thought & real life experience. thanks bearcut for sharing.

It's at least as good as any of my SHBM's I've had about six or seven Battle Mistresses over the years, and it hangs with them no problem.

Like all handles, it depends on your hand. If you don't wear gloves you may get blisters/hotspots, but keep using it untill your hands are tough. :D

In all it wears on my hand less than either the slotted screw BM's, the brass rivot BM's, or the FBM's YMMV.

Fit and Finish is very high.

Chopping and batoning is easily accomplished for me. However, there are people like Dennis that have more experience with the FJ on much harder woods than what we have up here.

I tend to do more bushcraft and shelter building with large knives than chopping and splitting.
An ax still trumps any knife when I have to get the job done.
However, like many others will relate, the FJ chops as well as the heavier, and often thicker, large blades.

The handle works well for me. It is starting to smooth out with use, and in that respect, is pretty comfortable. Tough hands and/or gloves are still a good idea though because of the texture and cross hatching. The handle design snap cuts very well.

The steel holds and edge better than any other knife I’ve used, and I’ve owned and used them all. Fehrmans have thinner edges than comparable knives. They slice like crazy and yet still don’t dent or chip out. I’ve had other “tough” knife steels that held up fine, but they left a lot to be desired in the edge and overall geometry department. CPM 3V is great, and Fehrmans 72 hour heat treat makes the most of it.

I am having an aftermarket kydex sheath made as we speak. It will have the same piggyback/ESEE pouch design as the Fehrman FJ. I’ll be putting an identical survival ditty in this new rig.

You are really going to like the Hoodlum! It’s a very unique knife design.
Wicked, I repeat, wicked fast and light.
Contrary to the website information, the blade is coated, Teflon, and it works very well so far.
For $230, it’s a great deal.
TOPS F&F is right up there with Fehrman and Busse, and this knife is no exception.

i usually take thin leather gloves for cooler weather, if you out in mild climate you can use those cheap gloves with rubber dots for chopping. however if going in for a week or more i would take 2 pairs of gloves. some people like bearcut & mistwalker have much tougher hands than average since these guys are in the sticks longer than most of us. blisters in the early part of a trip are not pleasant .

Did you bolt the two Fehrmans together, or is the Peacemaker simply stuck in the pouch?

Thanks.
They're bolted together, kydex to kydex.
The ESEE pouch is bolted to the Peacmaker kydex at the top, and threaded to the FJ kydex holes at the bottom. It's all pretty sturdy.

BTW, I didn't use the ESEE altoids tin that came with the pouch because it was too small. The pouch can hold much more than the tin allows. The inner ditty bag keeps everything secure, and from falling out of the pouch opening.

I also forgot to include in the list, and picture, the DMT Diafold sharpener that the kit contains.
