I've been thinking about ordering a Fehrman First Strike. I was wondering if anyone else here on the forum owns one of these knives? If so, I'm really curious to know more about its chopping ability and toughness too.

You know thats funny, that is the one I ruled out. Any reason why you want a First strike? to me comparing to similar sized blades I have, it is more of a jack of all trade and master of none. I dont own one, simply basing on similarities of other knives.

From my own hiking and camping experiences, I have come to like a fixed blade that is around 7" - 8". This is just long enough for typically batoning and some chopping chores. Any blade longer than that, to me, becomes cumbersome. However, I will say that I like to carry my fixed blade on my side. If you carry one on your pack, a longer one probably wouldn't be quite as bad to deal with. This is all just my opinion. Your tastes may be different and I wouldn't want to discourage you from something that you have your heart set on.

Mind you that First Strike is quite heavy and bulky for a knife that size. Of course like a Fehrmans, its quality is second to none.

Last Chance is around 5" and is a fine chopper/slicer/cutter. Even that one is bigger than you would expect.

Not too sure about the quality as I have never seen a real test on them.

Does anyone know the actual weight? I'm considering getting one too.

I have one. It's comparable to an old Busse SHE. Very good steel, slightly thinner primary grind then the Busse, but no problems at all chopping, etc. The 3V steel is great for toughness and edge holding.

I would agree with the jack of all trades comments. This size of knife chops ok, cuts ok, etc., and for only carrying one knife it's on my short list. The ergos and F & F are superb. One thing I really like is that it has more of a point than others of it's size, which makes it more versatile to me.

I don't know the weight, I'd check the web site. From what you've said about your requirements, this would be a very good knife for you, since it's in the size range you are looking for.
