No Fehrman section, so I figured I'd post here.

I'm interested in a First Strike, and from what I've read, the satin blades have excellent rust resistance if properly cared for. Obviously the black knives are coated, but the "Care & Instructions page" refers to a coating on "our knives" (generally), so I am wondering - do the satin knives bear some sort of clear protective coating?

No they don't. It's just polished steel.
From my experience 3V rusts if not properly cared for. I used to have a satin finished peace maker that I used for everything including food preparation. I had to unscrew the handle slabs from time to time to clean the steel under them from some superficial rust. Nothing really bad but quite annoying. Larger fehrmans have rubber between steel and hanlde slabs. It prevents water from getting under the slabs, so it should be better. You are considering a larger blade - if it is for use, I'd choose a coated blade. The coating on the blade will wear off the blade from use, but it'll stay intact on the handle and protect it. Here's my first strike - excellent blade! I'm really amazed how much 3V from Fehrman can handle!

I have a custom Fehrman designed by the late Dr Ron Hood and it is 3V with black coating. It's pretty resistant to corrosion for 3V but you have to be careful: CPM 3V does not like corrosion at all. There is no perfect solution incluing Ren Wax, Tuff Glide etc but consistent maintenance with that or a suitable oil is de rigeur. Great knives, though.

I have had a first strike that I used for hunting. The satin finish will get rust spots if not dried and oiled after use. Great blade. Only sold it to get a ka.

I have 2 EJ's and the one have seen a lot of use (abuse) which means the coating is long gone! I don't clean it often and still had no rust problems.

Thanks for your replies! It seems like it'd make sense (for all such knives) to apply the coating JUST to areas beneath the slabs for protection and leave the blades satin. These knives look awesome though, I guess I'll go with the coated version.
