Fehrman knives Final Judgement

Does anyone out there own a Fehrman Final Judgement, or any other Fehrman knife for that matter? I have been debating for a while about getting a Fehrman knife. They look high quality but they are expensive. I know a lot of knives are expensive you usually get what you pay for. Also, looking to buy either a Trace Rinaldi Armageddon or a RJ Martin Trailblazer the 10.5 inch version not the small 7 incher. I am not sure if Trace still makes knives anymore though. Anyone have any experience with these knives Especially the Final Judgement or Extreme Judgement.

Fehrman knives are very well made with nice fit and finish. The consistency of the edge grind on the examples I've seen has been superb. Edge geometry is superb for general cutting and plenty robust for camp clearing/some chopping though you might want to start a micro-bevel on it if you're planning on a lot of heavy chopping--I've chipped 3V on hard knots before with similar geometry to Fehrman's factory grind. If the ergonomics suit you (no way to know without holding one) then I don't think you'll have any regrets for the purchase. Also, they seem to resell very easily.

Don't know about Trace--someone'll probably pop in here.

My first Fehrman was Dr. Hood's custom design, with the hollow handle and the pot notch. That became my favourite long user camp knife, alongside my Busse straight handle Steelheart. That's how highly I think of Fehrman's knives. CPM 3V is a fantastic steel, if you can avoid rusting, and so far the coating has held up. It can be hrd to sharpen and even 3V gets dull. As for impact resistance, my blades are excellent, but isn't that a function of heattreating and geometry as well as the steel? I would expect there to be differences on different models madeat different times. I also love the little necker, the Thru Hiker. Super efficient and 3V.
I'm looking to get one or two more, myself.

I have 4 Fehrman blades and cannot recommend them highly enough. They are some of the best blades made and their customer service is great as well. CPM3V with Fehrman's heat treat is as good as you can get. I have never chipped CPM3V and I have chopped frozen knots before and chopped into rocky ground before with no problems. I will own more Fehrmans! If you get one you will not regret it.

I bought a Final Judgement. I plan on buying another one if I like it, and a Peace Maker, Cold Fury, and an Extreme Judgement. I am all about fit and finish. I always buy coated blades for corrosion reasons, and because I like the way they look better than a scratched up satin finish blade does.

I have a Last Chance.
It has excellent fit and finish. The handle is the most ergonomic of any handle I’ve tried, the most useful positions also.

I’ve never chipped the blade and have no issues with the knife at all.
Great knife.

Good to hear all the positive responses. Makes me feel better about shelling out the 360 for the knife and sheath. I'm sure it will be a great campknife, and can't wait to get it. Anyone else that owns one pleases comment. I would love to hear more responses, Rich.

I have a Peacemaker and the 7in non-recurve (last chance?). Great knives. The 3V steel holds a great edge, and sharpens easily. The ergonomics are wonderful, and I've enjoyed them greatly. The PM is probably the most ergonomic small fixed blade that I've ever held, it's really, really good.

You won't be disappointed.

Also, I was wondering if I should buy a Busse Battle Mistress to keep it company? Does anyone here have both that can give me feedback as to which one is the better knife. I am looking for three main characteristics.

1 Durability

2 Fit and finish. I know some have mentioned that the fit and finish is very good, but is it any better than a Busse knife? This is very important to me, as I like my knives to have a very nice fit and finish. (I am just weird that way)

3 Edge durability, which one would be more prone to chipping, denting, rolling and general edge damage? My main use of the knife would be for general camping chores. Thanks-Rich

I can't tell you which is the 'better' knife, both are tough as nails, but I can give you my opinion on question #2- fit and finish.

I recently handled a new Limited Edition Badger Attack TAC exactly like the one on this page:

http://www.bussecompanystore.com/knives.htm

This is a Limited Edition and should represent the finest Busse offers I would think.

The machining was not as well done as my Fehrman. The edge grind was not as well finished as many Benchmades I own. The Busses steel was polished pretty nicely. Again, nothing better than several other brands I have, including some made of S30V, which is really hard to polish to a shine. The LE ‘Tiger hide” handle was thinner than the handle on my Fehrman. The ‘tiger hide’ looked exactly like the picture, pretty unimpressive. Too bad, I have seen some of the ‘snakeskin’ handles that looked really nice.

The way a handle feels is purely a personal preference, but Fehrmans fit my hand a lot better. There is a lot more machining done on the Fehrman micarta slabs than on the Busse micarta slabs. I have average size hands and the Fehrman fills my hand a lot more than the Busse. If the Busse 'magnums' are this thin, I would hate to use the 'regular' ones.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, I like the Fehrman handles a lot more than the ‘tiger hide’ or regular Busse handles.

There is a major price difference in these two brands. For the price, I expected a lot more from the Busse aesthetically.

But hey, maybe you have money to burn! Get a Busse too. They have a huge following on this forum.

The only Battle Mistess I have is an old straight handle. Handles are oftn too small for my paws, like the Cold Steel Trailmaster my Busses replaced, but the BM and SH straight handles are perfect, so maybe the newer ones are narrower.
If you can afford Busse BM for your camp knife and you find it isn't too big for general chores, then by all means buy one! It is a superb knife! Infi is a great steel. I agree that the fit and finish looks a little rough but I like it and the quality is there.
IMHO both Fehrman and Busse are amazing working knives and it's down to personal preference the performance is so good. Chipping, rolling etc? Both are superb, CPM 3V and Infi.
My preference would be both, if the wallet were willing (and the wife sleeping). That's the classic knife knut dillemma, and the usual (expensive) solution. You know eventually you will get both ;)

In my not-too-humble opinion:

Busse wins on durability. I haven't seen any other knife as overbuilt for toughness and durability as Busses. Fit and finish goes to Fehrman, although what you happen to get is down largely to luck - some people seem to get all knives from all makers with flawless fit and finish, and some, like myself, seem to see a lot of not so flawless specimens. I wonder why? :D As for edge durability, Busse is far superior. Just try getting INFI to chip, it's not easy even if you beat it right into concrete for some reason or lack thereof. If you're concerned about edge damage, then get a Busse, they have extremely damage resistant edges thanks to the steel and the geometry. In normal use, you're never going to notice the differences though, unless you go out specifically to measure it.

US president Bush is now visiting my country (Croatia). Let me show one of the most beautiful american goods, the incredible Fehrman's Thru Hiker. It fits perfectly my (medium size) hand. Thanks, Eric.

Let us know what you think when you get it and post pics! I have been debating ordering one.

I do have a Fat Fusion Battle Mistress and a Fusion Battle Mistress LE. The fit and finish are top notch, the grind especially on the LE is superb, and I love the magnum handles.

Busse vs. Fehrman? This was debated not to long ago...

I have a 7 1/2" blade Fehrman. It is only 1 month old, but it has done some chopping. It fells good in the hand and also feels good in the kitchen. It is razor sharp and the detail to the finishing work is perfect.
I will be going to a Hoodlum get together in May and hope to give it an even better test. As soon as I have the money I will be buying another Fehrman.

I have really been looking at Fehrmans lately. Especially the Last Chance. The only thing that concerns me is how wide the handles look. I have heard those who love the width while others think it is too wide. I run into the same things on my Busse knives. Ergos are such a personal thing I think I'll just have to try one out to know for sure. ;)
