I’ve been looking at Fehrmans knives, the Last Chance and the Shadow Scout, as I'd like a knife around 6 inches long (preparing for deployment) . I have a few questions concerning both knives to help me decide between them. I tried emailing their website, but haven't received a reply, probably busy, perhaps some of the members can answer the following.

1.What is the weight?
2.What is the circumference of the handle?
3.What is “cushioned” Micarta?
4.Are the Micarta scales removable?
5.Is the Satin Finish, exposed metal or clear coated?
6.What is the delivery time?

Thanks in advance!

I can't answer all the questions, but I did bring up a few in a different thread on this forum. To offer a pre-emptive answer, however, try calling the number on their website. I've done this (initially at Eric Fehrman's bidding in one post), and have had my questions answered by the Man himself. He's very helpful and would certainly be the final word on the knives.

To the answers:

The satin finish is not coated. It will require the same maintainence as the raw edge on the black crinkle (well...okay...you don't have to sharpen the whole thing :D ). Eric suggests a light coat of oil after use and wipedown.

Currently ship time seems to be 1.5-2 weeks (at least for the FJ and PM, which are the knives I'm interested in). This may vary for the mid-range sizes.

Good luck, I'm waiting for my first Fehrman right now. Folks in a variety of forums have had nothing but good to say about the knives, and I'm confident I'll feel likewise.

Cheers,
Neil

I can't answer your questions about the weight or circumference of the models that you mention.

“Cushioned” Micarta refers to the layer of thin rubber material that is between the handle slab and the blade. It dampens shock when chopping. I don't think that the Scout model has it. It's only on the larger handled knives.

The scales are removable
Satin Finish is exposed metal
Deliver time of my last purchase was 2 weeks.

Good luck on your decision. You will like Eric's knives

You might also want to consider the Cold Fury, since it is in the size range you mention. The Last Chance I have is excellent, but that Fury keeps tempting me. I have medium size hands and the Last Chance is almost a little big for my hand(it is still comfortable though and I can control it well). But I have the older handle slabs, I think the new slabs would feel even better.

I think a coated blade would be better for deployment, just my opinion. Easier to take care of and less shiny.

Just an update...granted, this isn't the knife you're looking at, but I just received my Peacemaker, and it is, fresh out of the box, the sweetest knife I own.

The edge on this is scalpel sharp (trust me, I know scalpels), the finish is flawless, and the grip feels like it was made for my hand. I can't wait to abuse it a bit.

Finally, I actually received the knife within four days (even better than the predicted ship date, woohoo)!

Kudos to Eric and his crew at Fehrman. Now for my next Fehrman...saw Jay post something about a neck knife...hmmm?

Peace,
Neil

Congrats Doc on your Fehrman,

I dont think there is a better semi custom maker out there, the turn around time cant be beat,The blades come with a scary sharp edge, even the large choppers.

Plus Eric is a great guy who stands behind his product no questions asked.

I have used and abused my Fehrmans and they scream for more, they have held there edge better then anything I have used and I have used alot of blades from alot of known makers.

Plus his attention to detail is second to none, again congrats on a fine blade that will last you a lifetime and never let you down.

Give us a update once you have get to use that fine blade :)

Thanks, Featherstone, I'll post more with pics when the work gets underway!

Cheers,
Neil

hey featherstone,
i have finally decided to buy a hoodhunter 10 and i'm having a hard time picking a blade finish. is the black crinkle like what busse puts on their blades or is it something different. and does the satin finish rust easily in comparison to say satin finish carbon v steel.
carbon v seems to be easy to care for if you clean it once in awhile.
thanks in advance :)

Hey Witchhunter,

The crinkle coat is similiar and holds up great,as for the satin finish I havent had a problem with rust as I wipe down the blade when im done using it.

I simple wipe down and a light coat of oil is all that is needed,The satin finish cold steel blades IMHO rust alot easier, since you are familiar with the CS satin finish and taking care of it I would go with the satin on the Fehrman.

On the Fehrman its more like a light grey finish, rather then a satin finish that you se on CS blades, again the Fehrman finish has held up ALOT better then any satin blade from CS has in my exp.

Good luck with getting your Fehrman, You will love the attention to detail on these blades, plus they are scary sharp for such big knives and make great slicers and choppers, and they hold there edge for a LONG time :D

Hope this helps.........
