I have recently inherited a Fehrman First Strike and I have a Busse Hell Razor on the way. Which would you guys recommend for the every-situation knife??? I am a big fan of the 7" blade, and both are thick (Fehrman=.25", Busse=.187") but the grinds are different, full flat tanto/drop vs saber beveled drop point, and the grips are worlds apart. I have an extended trip planned in one month where this knife will be used daily to make anything and everything I need. Base camp will be a log cabin with no running water in NH, with trails/mountains sorrounding. The companion supplies will be a PSK kit and Vic Swisschamp XLT, and fire piston. Any input is appreciated, please, please, PLEASE keep this from turning into a INFI is the best steel in the world thread. I own many Busse knives and love INFI, but in this case I am asking those much more experienced than I, which knife is better designed to my needs. Thanks guys.

Truth be told I am very biased on this one.... Not only am I a huge Busse fan but the Hell Razor is my favorite knife they make. When you say you have a Hell Razor on the way is it them CE Hell Razor from the recent ganza (convex edge)?

Either way I own many knives from both Co.s and they will both fit your needs. The Fehrman First Strike is a slightly larger knife 7.5" as apposed to the 7" Hell Razor.... IMO a 7" is about as large as I like to go w/o switching to a 10" blade. I also prefer .187 since it is a good balance of cutter/chopper. I also tend to think that the full flat grind sticks more during deep chops. One last consideration is that 3V will rust easier, but if you clean you blades after use this won't be a factor. That is of course all just personal preference. YMMV

If you're going to use the knife to do all everyday tasks - and that means meals preparation, than I think you should try the Fehrman - it thicker, but I've heard (I only had the pleasure to own Peace Maker from Eric Fehrman - what a great knife!) it has quite thin edge and with full flat grind it should be doing well the meal preparation works. I used to have the HR and it was not the best slicer. Both knives are tough, and both should chop well, with in my opinion slight advantage to Fehrman, as it's probably a bit more blade heavy than the HR. I'd love to read your thoughts on First Strike when you come back.

The HellRazor is a competition edition, so it is bare INFI with a full convex edge. As far as I know the edge is polished some, but no higher than 400-600 grit. I have already been working on the Fehrman and have it polished up on black arkansas stones. It took a while but from what I hear CPM3V holds one hell of an edge.

The Convex edge of the Hell Razor makes it a far far better slicer/chopper, when compared to the original offering. In fact the CEs are the sharpest factory edge I have seen from Busse.

As for the 3V it does hold a great edge and I don't think many people could tell the difference between it and INFI, when it comes to toughness and edge retention. I know you said you own a few Busses so I think its safe to say you can expect similar performance.

As I stated before this will come down to personal preference (Size,Grip,Etc). There is a reason both of these Co.s see a great deal of my money

Edit: I do find it easier to sharpen INFI compared to 3V, but both hold an edge so this might not come into play

I wanna hear the results!!!

My money is on the Fehrman

I like to root for the underdog...lol

I have both and love both. Since no one can get off of dead center, you need to bring BOTH and do a nice review for us, thanks for volunteering! :D

Wow hard choice. Bothe exelent knives, but a little different. The qualit and steel is top rate on both, so I would go for whichever knife feels better in the hand. I do think the fehrmans grind would make it better with food prep, but would also do well with all tasks.

If I were you I would just take both and have some fun with them.
