I am looking for a larger size camp knife around the 7" mark and have narrowed it down pretty much to these three makers. This knife will be for general camp chores. I know a little abut Scott and Razorback Knives and about Eric and Fehrman Knives, however I don't know as much about the Tridents other than everything I have seen and read is great. Any more information you could give me on these three and which one you would select would be appreciated. I am not opposed to another brand if you can convince me. Thanks for you help!

I have two camp knives from Scott, one with 5160 steel, and the other with D2, both have buffalo horn handle scales. Not only is he a great knifemaker, he is a good guy to boot!

Oh yeah, the knives have been put through hell, chopping down trees, etc, things I guess I should have used an axe for, but just wanted to play with my knives. They've held up to everything I threw at them.

I have Fehrman's Final Judgement and Peace Maker, and would not hesitate to recommend them. For general camp chores, the Peace Maker is good. It's in the lighter stock and carries easier than the heavier Fehrman blades. The First Strike or Last Chance might be better if you count chopping as a camp chore. For chopping and prying the FJ rules, it's big to carry though.

OTOH, a lot of folks really like Scott's Razorback knives. I have his PSK and I just might order one of his Buffalo blades.

Trailside22,
I can't tell you about Razorback since I don't own one of his, however, he get very good ratings on all of the forums I go to.

Now, Trident, or Fehrman?
I own 4 of the Fehrman Tool and Die knives and if you are looking for a 7" blade I would recommend the "First Strike". The handle is shock mounted between a thin layer of rubber to reduce vibration reaching the hand. CPM3V is almost indestructable for the uses you mention.Go to this link and scroll down to the fingernail photos to see Fehrman knivs tested. http://www.survival.com/html/hood_hunter.html

Trident: I have 2 Tridents now and another one coming next week. I think if you need a knife that will take down a house or kill a tank then Trident is the way to go. You will have email or call Trident Custom if you want a full 7" blade as I think all the ones on his web page max out at about 6.5" blades. My favorite for edc and just plain great looks to me is the Trident line of knves and the owner/maker and his wife are absolutly outstanding to deal with.

In the end I would say GO TRIDENT! This link is actually a Polish company but they have some great shots of how the Trident Knives have been used and abused. You might have to click on the English flag to get everything in english instead of Polish.

Cant go wrong with any of the above , I have three Fehrman , one Trident , my next camper comes from Scott.:) :) He posts on the Hoods Woods forum.Great guy that really knows his camp knives.:D

I am gonna quote the confederate here and agree that scotts knives are "TOUGH and SHARP!" I have one of his hunters and the thing is awesome. I have a fehrman first strike and it is a tough mother too. I dont know much about trident knives but their on the list. I think its up to looks, if you like a more traditional looking leather sheathed Big hunka steel and horn or antler go with scott and you wont be disappointed. If you want a more tactical looking knive with a slightly thinner grind go with a fehrman or a Trident. I love the warm feel of antler and horn so I would go with one of Scotts knives. But hay its up too you..

I have one of Scotts knives, a skinner model, that is one of the best hunters I`ve ever owned. I like the traditional looks ( horn handles) with the edge holding of the D2 blade that mine has. Plus he`s a great guy to deal with!

I've got a custom Trident camp knife and it is without question the toughest knife I've owned or handled. The 1/4" thick S30 steel will take anything you can throw at it. Hell, I let the scouts at scout camp use it to chop firewood and fell small trees and it was still sharp enough to cook dinner with that night. Any knife that will stand up to the 16 year old boy scout test is incredible in my book! :)

I got one of Scott's knives aa little while ago, it is probably my best field knife. Sharp, tough and with beautiful classic lines (and those pretty buffalo horn slabs).

I found Scott to be very helpful when we were discussing what sort of knife I wanted. He had the perfect balance between sharing his wisdom and listening to my requirements. I couldn't be happier with my knife.
