What is the best felling axe on the market?

I need something bigger than my boys axe for larger trees.

Anyone have experience with the Council Tools Velvicut American felling axe?

There are few people that could definitively tell you what the best is. That being said, the higher end axes from Council are very well done. Even the lower cost ones can be excellent, but you might want to specify in your order what you're looking for to get the best. Yes, the GB line of 'American Felling Axes' are beauties, but it is a large investment, and the styling and profiling/head geometry is still distinctly European.

I strongly encourage you to check out the vintage market if you're going for a felling axe. There is nothing like the true ownership you will earn in restoring an axe back to life, and we can help you with that.

Otherwise, yes, the Velvicut is a fine chopper.

Ditto! There is a reason that full size axes have fallen into disfavour and why chainsaws have become so popular: they're quick and require much less effort. Garage sales and flea markets are awash in inexpensive golden oldies when it comes to first class axes. I suspect you're best off with a refurbished/resurrected one so that you don't have a pile of money invested and then discover you're really not going to use it very much. Nice thing about swinging an axe (if you're dedicated and determined) is you can allow your membership at a fitness club to lapse.

If you are serious about falling many trees, buy a chainsaw, Husky or Stihl. They are far safer for falling and much quicker. While I own a few dozen axes, the Stihls do all the real work on my tree farm.

I've got a CT Velvicut Dayton. I haven't attempted to fell tree with it...But, I did do a splitting contest with it against a Kelly Perfect Michigan pattern. It was a draw. It should do a great job feeling a tree.

The Council Velvicut is good, as is the Granfors Bruks right out of the box. I have the GB American Felling Axe and it's beautiful. The Council is good enough that Best Made Company puts their stamp on it and sells it for $500. Personally I would never dream of spending over $200 an axe, unless its a Tuatahi Axe.

As said before, restoring one is also very gratifying.
