Felt Belts?

Has anybody tried felt belts? K&G sells them for $26. If I can polish on the 8" wheel with green chrome on these I'd buy one.

Thanks Mike,

Actually I did that from reading those threads. Didn't work. Don't know what happened. Most of the cork came off and the glue never smoothed out enough. Seems to leave marks.

That's that prompted this question.

Did you break the belts in for a minimum of 10 minutes before using them on a knife?

Yup Mike, sure did. Cork and crap everywhere. There was cork left on the belt, but it just didn't perform right - well not at all really - using 50% green chrome. I was hopeful but no go.

It could have been me I know.

Hmmm, that's unfortunate. I really have no experience with the felt belts. I use a medium felt wheel as part of the sharpening process, and run the spine of a knife down it occasionally, but that's it. Seems to me though, that you could do the same thing with the right buffing wheel and the green compound.

I use them in the commercial metal polishing but would never consider using them on knives, surface is too rough and the amount of chatter is uncontrollable on hand held objects.

When they start to give up the felt layer lets go in chunks, this could hurt if you are polishing a sharp object.

If I remember correct I think Jerry Hossom may use them.
You may want to shoot him an email,I am sure he would be
glade to help.:)

Thanks guys,

I think I'll stick with buffing wheels. For me the belt would be more convenient. But, from George's experience sounds like they are sub optimal.

When I polish, I use plain cloth belts (also from K&G) with pretty good results. My experience with felt and dark green chrome is that it is just too aggressive and tends to pit the steel.

I'd never heard of these till now. Are these like abrasive belts but without the abrasive on them and you can load the surface with compound ? I was thinking of turning an old 400grit belt inside out and use the bare side with compound, but there's the joint in the way.

I have recently tried using my old green Scotchbrite belts that have gone flat, loaded them up with black oxide compound (supposed to be 220grit). It comes out looking something like 400-600grit.It isn't polishing , but it helps give a nice satin field-grade finish and makes doing a nice hand (maybe not even need 320grit) followed by this belt before doing a hand rubbed finish. But it wastes a lot of compound 'cos most of it gets flung around the grinder as you're trying to load the belt.

The cloth belts sound interesting. Jason.

The cloth belts are just that, belts without abrasive. K&G also has polyester belts which work about the same.
