feral hog on my brothers ranch
this fatty was only one of the fatties that break barbed wire like kite string. we had been retrieving his cows from adjoining reach last week. my guess is about 450 lb.biologists figure we have about 3 million in texas.real pests.

That's a biggun. I'll be working at ft bliss at the beginning of the year. Hopefully I'll get the chance to help cure the hog problem down there.
 
that there is a big boy for sure. i have to point this out cause its kinda freaking me out a little. by his back leg there is that his balls that are that big. if so i see why the hogs are getting outta control in texas jesus lol
 
Nice porker, at least they are good to eat! Curious what type of bullet you used amd how it performed. I shoot a .270 but have not run into a 450 lb deer yet. :)

450 lbs could feed a lot of people. or one person for a really long time ;)

this 270 is a jeep gun. h& r single shot , whole package was less than 400$. the scope is an unheard of brand but i can see the holes on target at 110 yds. so optics ca'nt be terrible. in texas our deer are not the 300 lb. monsters of penn. so many are taken with the 223 or 243 but i like a 308 or 270 as minimum caliber.my go to is a rem. antique 721 with a burris 3 by 12. will do 3/4 in. with hornady 130 gr. custom. the h& r likes federal 130 gr. nosler ballistic tip. i'm an ole timer & in the 70s & 80s we had to reload to get at least 1 inch grps.with the advent of good computer controls & better bullets we usually try 3 factory loads to get the 1 in. groups we desire. we start with federal, hornady, & win. & usually find the load. the h& r was cranky & took 5 fac. loads to find the charm. the 270 is plenty adequate for any hog unless you are shooting from the back angle & need a quartering shot.

Thanks for the info Dennis. I shoot Winchester soft points for deer in my .270 (a Savage with 3-9x) and it will print consistant 1 inch groups at 100 yds. I probably would look to a different bullet to take a big, tough slab of bacon like that boy. Looks like the Nosler was the ticket.
 
Well done! The question must be asked. What GEC did you use to gut and clean him?
 
big boars are'nt good to eat unless castrated when young. smell like kidneys when cooking unless you go thru much--much prep & smoke it for about 2 days. i do'nt want to start a fight about shooting things you do'nt eat. we consider these things not to be sporting game but property destructors. any detractors should fix barbed wire on their knees in 100 degrees for a coupal of days to appreciate the demise of these feral pigs. no way to weigh it , useda 30 ft. chain & the jeep to pull it out of the brush & it snapped a 5 in. mesquite like a twig as we got him into open. from the looks of a rub on a telephone post we have a 600 lb. still hanging out.

Dennis, I was going to say I hope your not even going to attempt to eat that thing, and to all those on here who think that thing would be good to eat, send me your address and when we kill some this year I'll send all you want and bet you won't eat a drop of it. Those boars once they break about 130 pounds bust that first nut and drop those balls TASTE LIKE CRAP. There is hardly nothing you can do to make it edible. Dennis shoot everyone of those crop wrekcin, fence bustin, hole wollowin, bastards that stands still long enough to shoot and leave em for the buzzards and worms. Those pigs have become a real problem.

Those hogs are destroying crops around where we hunt like there is no tomorrow and United States Tax payer is footing the bill as crop insurance is through the USDA read Federal Government, read tax payer. So yea, shoot em all, save me some money.

wild boar meat is in big demand in some parts of Europe (Germany and northern Italy mostly) to make sausages out of. at least, that's where 99% of the pigs boxed* in Australia are headed. the rest go for dog meat.

i've found a few recipes for wild boar, they all involve a long marinade (over a week in most cases).

in general, they taste (and smell) just revolting.

the only wild pig meat i've had that was nice was when we caught a sucker live, took it home and gave it fresh water and apples for a month before slaughter. THAT tasted fantastic. but a porker that's been living in the lignum is bleagh.

(* when i talk about "boxing" a pig, i mean take the pig to the wild game meat chiller boxes found in most australian towns and sell the meat. unfortunatly, you need to be accredited to sell at the boxes even if only for dog meat).
 
when i was hunting the true brush country of south texas we set traps around the 1200 acres & caught quite a few. no one wanted to spend a whole day cleaning the large sows so they were released. the sows around 130 lbs were decent to eat but the little chubbies of 70 lbs were great fare. a big funny occurred last year when my nephew hunting near vernon tx. [north] decided to release a 150 or so hog. he did'nt carry a gun & was in a remote area by himself. when he released the pig it chased him & he hopped up on top of cage. was 1.5 hours before hog decided to leave, we laughed the rest of the weekend.

Thanks for the dining report. I had no idea that the big boars (and sounds like the sows as well) are not good table fare. I've never hunted boar personally (although I would love to) and only eaten it once. It must have been a smaller pig because it was some of the best pork I've ever had.
