It's a nice looking little flashlight, but the beam stinks.

It's a low-power flashlight, but the beam is focused to a narrow little spot which I always hate on a weak light (too narrow for close work, too dim for distant work). A wide beam would at least be good for close use.

Then it also has a bright ring further out. It looks like a hollow circle with a little spot in the middle, and only very dim light throughout. To be extra annoying, one side of the outer ring fades out as if it were broken open, so it isn't even symmetrical.

I would post a picture, but I already packed it up to return.

I have an E1, and I really like it. Yes, as it comes from the factory, the beam has lots of rings. It's easy to fix, though. Remove the bezel and use a permanent black marker to color the tube at the base of the reflector. Do this, and the rings will be gone. Also, if you remove the bezel, the E1 puts out a perfectly smooth 360 degrees of light. As I said, I really like the E1 (although I currently carry a LOP-SE.)

How does it open? Does it just unscrew? I couldn't get it open, but I didn't try too hard to avoid damaging it.

Do a search on here and you'll find various answers to this. As I remember, some bezels on the E1 are easier to remove than others. Try wrapping a rubber band around it a few times so you have some grip, then give it all you got. I think a few had to resort to strap wrenches. Mine came apart quite easily--but, then again, I'm much stronger than most mortal men. :)
