Preliminary review only. I received the new Fenix nitecore Smart PD.

Here's a link:

A couple of things that set it aprt from previous Fenix models: The knurling is finally part of the picture, and it has an internal "Piston Drive" switch, very smooth and works very well. No funky modes just varies from bright to dim and vice-versa.

I like fenix before, but this is my new favorite.

Do the flashlight freaks prefer it over the Fenix L1D-CE?

I haven't reviewed the NiteCore D10 yet - but I have compared the NiteCore NDI (Defender Infinity) with the Fenix L1D-Q5, as well as other lights in -

(the NDI and D10 have similar spec's - however there is some controversey about the rated output levels - please see the discussion in the review)

Yes! We do!

The build quality of the Nitecore is much better, machined out of stronger aluminum and has nice grippy knurling. The Piston Drive switch should prove far more reliable than the clicky switch of the Fenixes, as it removes most of the mechanical complexity while still offering much of the same functionality. The F&F is superb and within very high tolerances, and I would consider it right up there with Surefire. Here is a video by the guy who sells them at Fenix-Store.com http://youtube.com/watch?v=irqhuV8Xo_A.

Yeah, I'm a believer. I liked Fenix for the light output, but thought they lack a bit in the AA and 123 sizes.

Don't quite get this - in the direct comparison side-by-side beamshots the NiteCore Defender Infinity (NDI) matched the Fenix L1D-Q5 (also a single AA light) in output for any practical usage for both regular AA (NiMH) or Li-Ion (14500) (please see NiteCore Defender Infinity Comparison Review)
- so how is the Fenix lacking please?

First let me say that I don't keep up on all the different proliferation of lights. What I meant that as much as I like Fenix, they did not have quite the subjective quality feel, and for a specific example never had real knurling which I like.
