the only maintenance has been stropping on diamond paste leather. knife is still very sharp & hopefully you can see the mirror polish on the edge. this is the final judgment at 9.5 in. only used on mesquite wood for chopping. mesquite is 50% harder than hickory. the bevel is sophisicated & is probably the only knife i would ever send back to factory for reedgeing in a year or so.
dennis---the black finish is extremely tuff however future ferhmans will be obtained with the satin finish since i feel black in the boonies is funky.

My Fehrman with Satin Finish did corrode on me a little bit, but it joined me on several kayaking adventures before it began. As long as you are using it in an environment where there isn't too much moisture you should be fine with the satin finish, but I would probably get mine coated if I ever bought another one.

It's nice to see yours is getting good regular use and shrugging off that mesquite wood like it's Ankerson's phone book paper!

I've got a 10" Hood Hunter. Do you use the diamond paste that Fehrman sells or some other, or is all diamond paste about the same?

i'm a newbie to diamond paste but the ferhman product has been great so far. if you're desiring lots of info on diamond get with knifenut 1013.

I just ordered the Ferhman First Strike, Good to know that a light stropping is all it will take for theese knives to keep going.

I once have two of this Fehrman FJ. Kind a knife that I missed so much. Nice one Dennis.

Just curious, how do you find the handles on these Ferhman Survival Series knives? i heard they were too small, then i heard they were too big. i also read that they are all the same size but i read that Fehrman changed the handles a little while ago. i dont know what to think anymore. do the new Fehrmans have different size handles?

i have large hands, so i was thinking the ergos on the First Strike would be better than the Last Chance for me. does anyone here have huge mitts and use a Fehrman?

I've handled a FS and it is very comfortable, but my hands are not huge probably mediumish to large.
