this piece of mesquite from my brothers ranch was so tuff i sweated in 6 0r 7 minutes. knife would still shave, this desert loving tree grows thorns on 2nd growth shrubs that penetrate tractor tires.i'll add hardness scales in a minute.

top pic is handle of final judgment. the bottom pic is final judgment when clean. the black coating is real tuff but i think members will prefer the satin finish . although the black coating is less expensive my next ferhman will be in satin finish since i think it's much more attractive & when buying knives in this price range why not go all out ?

also since feburary i've used nothing but the ferhman diamond loaded strop to touch up the blade. the 3v is increadibly tuff.

I have the coated version also, and it is very wear resistant. I would list Kalgard (CRK coating) as the only one possibly tougher, in my experience anyway.

Dennis,

Thanks for the photos and continued review.
Are you impressed with Fehrmans 3V yet?:D

You are right about going with a satin finish. Fehrman charges $50 for the satin FJ.
That is a steal when you compare the upgrade to some of the other brands satin upgrades.

BTW, I have seen some Fehrmans that had the coating stripped off of them. The handles had what looked like a bead blasted finish. The blade portions were smoothly finished. They didn’t have too many tooling marks, and no dimples, or anything.
Fehrman finishes their knives well, even if they’re coated.

Dennis, you are certainly right about how hard and tuff mesquite is. I do some smoking of meats, and using mesquite chips, if they are thicker than about 3/8" you have to put them in a vise and use pliers or even a hammer to break them up smaller.

Can't wait to get my Koster M.U.C.K. (My Ultimate Camp Knife) in 3V, and do some tough use testing on it. This knife is 3/16"+ thick, with 6" drop point blade and 11.5" OAL. Talked to Dan Koster at BLADE, and he runs his 3V at around 60-61 HRc. 3V really seems to be "the deal" according to those who have used it.

black mamba & others are well advised to wear eye protection when chopping on mesquite.my brother shot a 10 in. mesquite tree years back when winchester brought out the .356 in 250 gr. bullets, i was standing back about 20 feet & the tree exploded on impact . a chunk hit the blazer by my head & i was lucky it missed. dennis. incidently the ferhmans come out at 57 rr so make sure if yours is in the 60s you have a diamond coating on your strop
