info please- im experimenting with etching prior to doing my first piece of damascus (damasteel, i will follow their recomendations, i think they use HCL) and im a bit confused about ferric chloride, and its concentration- the standard seems to be a 4 to 1/ H2O to FeCl3 useing "Archer's echant"as the starting point, the stuff i obtained from radio shack was called "PCB etchant" is this the same strength? i mixed it the same(4-1) and tried it on a polished 1080 blade for about 10 min, then washed and buffed with green chrome, results were not too bad and the dark grey contrasts the elk antler handle and copper guard quite nicely.am i going about this the right way? how long can i use the solution and lastly is there any other etch that you can recomend

Chuck, you're doing just fine. Don't change a thing. The 4:1 etchant will give you plenty of control. If it is not dark enough for you, just put it back in and do it some more.

Good luck
