HelloEveryone,

I’m new to knife making and have a question regarding petting on my knife blade after using ferric chloride to darken my knife. Trying to figure out what went wrong.

I using 1084 steel and both knifes I’ve dipped have the same petting. Is this normal?

Are you neutralizing the acid after the etch? Or just washing it off?

how long did you leave it in the FC?
Do you dilute your FC, and if so what is the mixture ratio of water to FC?
Who is sourcing your 1084 steel?

All these can play a part...different steels react to different mixtures and soak times. The quality of the steel has a great impact as well....chisese D2 vs CPM D2 can be vastly different due to production and quality standards.

The steel is 1084 high carbon steel from New Jeresy steel baron.

I did not dilute the FC Should have diluted the FC?

The first blade soaked for 10 min the second for 5 min.

Your steel should be good quality if its from NJSB

Personally I use a 50/50 mixture of FC and distilled water

When figuring out good mix times I go in 5min increments...Start with a 5 min soak, neutralize, rinse, dry, and check where you are at. Some steels will get darker than others based on composition, personally I don't have a lot of experience with 1084, but some of the folks in the Maintenance & Tinkering forum may also be able to chime in for you.
