Hey guys,

I am hoping one of you have come up with a waterproof container to carry the 1/2" x 4" epcamps ferro rod?

Obviously, I am hoping that your suggestion is as compact as possible.

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

I have gotten that same 1/2" x 4" epcamps ferro rod wet any number of times. All I have done is wipe it off with a tuff cloth, and I haven't had any problems at all. I guess what works for knives works for firesteels.

Thanks guys,

I saw that original thread. It has some great suggestions.

Dang posts, I am missing the boat and missing some great posts that already address my questions.

could also ghetto it up and use a 20 guage shell inside a 12 guage shell and seal it with candle wax or a little ducttape You'd probably have enough extra room inside for a couple shredded cotton balls too.

Why does it need to be waterproof?

Why does it need to be waterproof?

Perhaps it is my lack of knowledge on the maintenance and care of a ferro rod, but am I to understand that the rod will corrode?

At least that was my impression and I intend on storing the rod for fairly long periods of time (or at least one of the two that I purchased). For the other, I'll be using it more frequently that I should be able to just wipe off and use.

OK cool. Just wondering.

I wonder if a dip in parrafin would not waterproof the long term one, and if necessary, provide some fuel for a hard lighting fire.

Fiddleback,

I don't think the paraffin wax idea would be so good, considering the tendency to wear off, crack, melt, etc. For long term storage, coating the firesteel in nail polish works pretty well.

Hey Guys...

Yaa all that is needed is nail polish or maybe even a couple of dips in Minwax..
That would be hardcore...

The only rods I've had problems with are the ones that I forgot about and didn't protect...

what about this. if not, you could use it for some fishing supplies i would imagine. or maybe even mag shavings? who knows.

I got 4 of these a couple of years back. Very nice tube, but the compasses were useless. Airbubbles kept them from spinning and aligning and were just as likely to point east or west as north. I actually have one of these on my keyring now. the bottom is an empty pocket where the compass used to be. I do not remember if I removed it on purpose or if it fell out.

Argh! I love the strike force! Now I have to get to the surplus store before they're all gone!

With a 1/2" X 4" rod, you have enough there to light a trillion fires...and then some. The 4" rod is too heavy to haul around the bush, IMHO. I cut the 4" rods in two, install a horn handle on one end, and find this arrangement to be most satisfactory given its much lighter weight.

As suggested, nail polish works fairly well.

Smear some clear silicone from a tube all over it, then let it dry. It is 100% sealed and has some extra breakage protection. When you want to use the rod, peel off the rubber. You might be able to find some 1- 1 1/4 inch plastic tubing in a plumbing supply shop, or some such place, just tape or glue a butt cap on it, drill it and hang it. The options are only limited by your imagination.
