Just picked up a new bayite ferro rod. I've struck it about 100 times. It throws sparks great. It now has ribs where I have struck it. What is this from? What is the best way to repair it? How do I stop from doing this in the future? Thank you in advance. I'm new to BF but have read a lot of threads. Great info from all of them. Again thank you.

If I have one in medium to long term storage, such as in a bug out bag, I coat it with clear fingernail polish. I've had too many corrode into dust while I wasn't looking, and I live in a dry climate.

Yes, you do have to scrape the polish off before you get to the rod, but to me, it's worth it.

I'm going to have to do that. My rod literally just started to corrode. I've been carrying it in the little pocket in the right pocket that's in jeans. It fits perfect next to my barrage. The rod is hooked to my belt with para cord for extra security. Any way, I noticed the first morning of camping when I went to light the fire that every surface of the rod that was not coated began to corrode. Even the hole where the lanyard is. I'm guessing it's from all the sweating I did setting up camp.

Good call knarfeng. I was looking at those. Made by exotac they look nice. A little pricey but I think I'm going to pick some up.

They do make ferro rods that have a threaded base and a matching container so that the rod itself can be sealed inside. If you don't use it all the time want it "just in case", it might be an option.

The striker on the old nano-striker was 440-C steel. The new striker is Tungsten Carbide (much harder). You can distinguish between the two with a magnet. The steel is slightly attracted to a magnet, the WC not at all.
