I recently bought A Ferro rod set from Ebay. A nice little leather pouch with a small ferro rod, a magnezium rod and a piece of saw blade. ( ive seen others here with it)

Immediateley after opening, I grabbed some tinder (dryer lint) and tried it out with good results.

A few hours later I grabbed the rod and began striking it with the saw blade but could'nt manage to get a spark, I tried severa angles and even the back of the blade to no avail.

I took out my Endura and struck a nice healthy spark with no problem, I figured mabey it was a buildup on the rod so after a few strikes with the Endura I went back to the saw with No luck

I have never tried using a saw blade to strike a rod before, I ususally use a knife Am I doing something wrong? could the saw just be the wrong type?

I always have a knife on me so I will probably never HAVE to rely on the saw blade but after so many people suggested it I would like to know if there is a better way to use it.

A good fero rod should be like a flame thrower if you are using a hacksaw blade to strike it. I recommend you buy a swedish fire steel by light my fire. You can get them on the bay.

From your description, I think I bought the same kit. The hacksaw blade included in the kit is the cheapest on the planet. If you replace it with a high quality blade you will have much better luck. I now make my own kits using deerskin for the pouches. One pictured.

That would be da one thanks Ill replace the Saw blade I may also split the mag bar to make room for more tinder.

I am putting gromets in the back of the pouch so I can put a lanyard on it and tie it to a belt loop.
