Ferro rods and folders?

If you use the back of the blade on a lock blade folder for a ferro rod scraper, blade closed or open?

I always keep the blade closed with my hand around the handle and blade, but seen a few folks on youtube and other reviews, doing it with the blade open and I kinda cringe just waiting for that lock to slip.

About two year ago a friend of mine was scraping one of my ferro rods with the back of his slip joint while it was opened, the blade did not closed but he managed to cut himself. Nothing serious but made me think.

Now, if I have to use a folder, it will be closed.

Best Regards

I would do it blade closed, but I have done it with it open.(Don't do it with a folder anymore) I don't think the lock would fail on any quality knife from that.

Get a little scraper like the ones that come with the Swedish army firesteel. They're small enough to fit in a wallet and then there's no damage to the knife and no risk of getting cut.

When I have used a folder, I did it with the blade closed. The Spyderco Native with those sharp squared off thumbrest serrations would throw monster showers of sparks.

Depends on the knife, I find that it is easier to use the knife closed, but if I had to, I wouldn't worry about it with a solid locking knife. I wouldn't even try it with a slipjoint, or even a locked opinel, for those, closed would be the only way to go. My griptillian has a great spine for striking, and it works really well closed.
