Ferro striker/PSK/survival tool proto #2

I have posted this elsewhere, but I guess it's time to come to the pros. I have some mods for the next prototype and have been taking other suggestions on how to improve it a bit more, so give me some more to consider. A hole for arrow stripping was a good suggestion and I have thought about adding a bow drill divot, but I don't think it would be big enough due to the size. A reduction of the top to create a smaller, but better hook will allow the thumb to travel further down the spine to increase pressure. I originally wanted to be able to get my thumb all the way down into the area, but it was just to small. I could do a gut hook, but I don't hunt and figure the need is minimal.

I think the next one will be a combo of the 2 prototypes. I also will probably go with a thinner stock for the next one(s), 1/8" 1095 is pretty darn thick for a small little guy.

Surprisingly it is very comfy in a number of handholds. Resting it on your index & middle finger, using your thumb for pressure on the spine is good, but my favorite is using the middle & ring fingers in the groves and extending the index finger on the top is really comfy.

The testing was pretty successful and I gained some other insights. I ended up giving this away to a good friend so I can't get more pics of the various hand holds or the sheath (bummer). It was a real quick sheath, but it had a little pocket on the back to hold a 1/4" ferro rod and was pretty neat. Kydex would be my first choice, but I really have to think about the best way to tackle that.

As with my first prototype, keep in mind the primary function of this tool is a ferro rod striker, everything else is gravy.

Scraps fatwood - check
makes sparks with ferro rods - check
Makes tents stakes and trap notches - check
guts fish - check
skins critters - i dunno, but i'm sure it will
makes a last ditch weapon - check
Fits in your altoids tin - check
Makes a nice little neck tool - check

Well done...I like both prototypes...your first one would probably make a better barbed spear but I do agree on trying it with 1/8" 1095. This would make a great addition to a PSK...thanks for sharing and let me know when you need to get rid of some of those prototypes;)

ROCK6

those are cool... i like them both... drop me a line when you make some more...:D

That's cool! I agree, a gut hook doesn't make sense on something like that and probably would be a bit dangerous. Are you going to use 1095 on the next proto? I would prefer something stainless if I were stashing it. It kind of looks like something from one of the Predator movies. :) I'd think about some super thin scales, something with a lot of friction, or a lot of jimping. Other than than, it looks pretty useful for what you intended. Awesome!!

Rock6 - Thanks! These ones are 1/8" 1095, but I think 3/32nds may work a bit better.

nc527 - I will do a run after I finalize the design and clear out orders.

Mike - Thanks as always, I appreciate it and I will get in contact with you.

KuRUpTD - Thanks and that is the goal. Something a bit more useful than the LMF striker or a hacksaw blade.

Snow - Much thank, I have always had a little frog spear in my kit (jigsaw blade) and I'm too fond of the additional use.

Fishshooter - I haven't worked with stainless yet but I'll check into it when I talk to the water jet people. I'm not fond of the additional costs of subbing out the heat treat. Scales would be cool, but I have some 250lb single inner strand paracordish that works great for wrapping the handle. It also provides the ability to create the makeshift spear, if need be.

I like it, and definitely think it would be worth its weight in gold in a kit!

I'd take one, 2nd proto looks a little more useful, but hell, i'd take either. Great work .

It's cool as heck, but I'd still be wary of that reverse-facing point at the back. It's just begging for a thumb to get jabbed and bloody, and I'm already prone to error when tired and shaky (ie survival situations).

On the 2nd proto that reverse point is pretty blunt, it would take some real force to hurt yourself.:foot:

I remember the first proto and thought it was cool. This one is much better. I agree that I would want the back-facing point to be rounded off, but this is a great looking, innovative tool. I'd buy one. Or 3.

Any chance of getting some in hand shots? Perhaps one holding it like you do when using the edge, and one in the position you use for striking?

I would if I could but I ended up giving this one away. I have the redesign in the works and will post that as soon as I get it done.

Sweet design! Although I'll echo what some have said that the "rhino horn" part looks a bit long. Good luck with the design!

looks really awesome! and a small kydex sheath for the pocket would be perfect for edc if someone would wish...

i want one:D:thumbup:

Very nice, when you start the order list be sure to put me down for one in the first few pictures.
