I did a search for these rods in the old posts but the links all seem down, dead. Can someone please give me some working links to HEAVY DUTY ferrocerium rods. Im looking for something like a half inch by four inches. Thanks.

I never thought of a ferro rod being heavy until I got the 4" rod from epcamps -- great ferro rod though.

Try amazon.com. They've a good selection including the large 12,000 strike oak handled one.

Yup, I just got two swedish firesteels (the bigger army model and smaller scout model, both with plastic handles) and a pack of maya sticks fatwood from the Amazon store. It came 4 days after I ordered it, and it was shipped from across the country by one of their partners. Great service as always.

I was playing with it yesterday and was always able to light a vaseline soaked cotton ball within three strokes on the firesteel. I think that's going to be my new primary firestarting method - firesteel + pj soaked cotton. Waterproof, reliable, and compact.

I found that to be the case too Rich. But, its a heck of a lot of fun starting one with flint, steel, and char cloth. Man thats just fun.

I have two 4 inch by half inch. from ecamps and they are awsome If you take a look at my post my nessmuc picture that I posted yesterday I have a pouch on the side of my #4 survival sheath that I carry one of them there. For less than 15 dollars that is a great buy.

Can you please tell me which one I have. Its a Swedish Firesteel with a red plastic handle. It works like gang busters, but it just seems too small and fragile for my taste. I have recently been testing variations of mag bar, firesteel, fatwood and vaseline cotton ball uses.

They make a 3000 strike striker and a 12,000 strike striker. THe 12,000 is ~1/2 inch dia, and ~4 in long including handle.

Funny about these things. The more I learn, the more I want to learn. Thanks all. ;)

You have the Scout Model.

Sounds like the army model.

Still, even though I think a larger one will go into my pack, I'm happy with the Boy Scout's HotSpark; I put it on a necklace to wear on me all the time.

I don't keep the striker... that thing is incredibly unreliable next to my SAK's reamer.

Dumb question. I bought a bunch of firesteels and got the little paracord that holds the striker wet and put it away with the wet cord wrapped around the steel. It ate through the flint about 1/8 inch overnight. Heres my question, should I spraypaint the flint to keep it more durable to water, or what? I guess I could keep it in a plastic bag but that seems to make it less accessible. Should I just remove the cord so water can't sit against it?

You can use nail polish to cover the steal. That would prevent it from rusting. It also wont be a good idea to keep wet rope with the steal as you want it as dry as you can.
