I'd like to buy at least two ferrocerrium rods - one keychain size and another larger one for my pack. Can anyone recommend a vendor?

Hi Nathan,

Since you're on the same continent only 800 miles from the Netherlands send me an email, our scouting group has some Large Military Firesteels extra and only ONE smaller (1/4" by 1.3/4") Scout model Firesteel by Light-My-Fire Sweden left.
I modified my own Scout Firesteel by removing the plastic thumbpiece and drilling a small hole through the end and attaching a split-ring.
makes fro a very small package and I use a P-38 can opener as scraper.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Bagheera's da man! Best deal, best dealer, and probably one of the finest men you'll ever care to meet. On top of that, the Light-My-Fire FireSteels are the absolute best, bar none.

I've bought from Bagheera 3 times, and my brother has once. He's honest, responsive, generous, and courteous. By far my best internet business transactions have been with him. Further, he sells great products at great prices.

For a decent super small ferro rod, check out the Boy Scouts of America - they have a nice small keychain sized model called the "Hot Spark" which works very well. It comes with a metal striker, but you're far better off using a piece of broken hacksaw blade for that purpose. I prefer the 32tpi blades as they tear up the ferro rod less than the larger tooth blades.

I recently bought 5 for $15 from ron hood

www.survival.com

they are pretty small which make them great for a mini-kit. also I am able to spread them around one in the car one in the mini etc.

Bagheera will treat you right, and the Swedish Firesteels are awesome.

I also like the Hotspark rods sold by the the Boy Scouts of America. The rod part is one inch (25mm) long with overall length of 2 1/2 inches (60 mm). It is item number WW01167 and the price is $2.15 USD. I carry one with my keys and another on a second keyring with a Photo microlight, a Leatherman Micra and a whistle.

To order the Hot Spark:

Someone already posted a link to Ron Hood's site. I read in a post that someone carries one of his small rods inside a short piece of parachute cord with the inside strands removed.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help, guys. Bagheera, I'll be sending you an e-mail as soon as I have a chance. Thanks again.

Nathan,

I just noticed you're in Italy..USGI? Either way, if you want a BSA HotSpark in addition to Bagheera's goodies, let me know I can send you one.

Mike

Thanks for the tip about the Boy Scouts ferrocerrium rod. I stopped by my local Scout store yesterday and bought several for Altoid kits, key rings, etc...being in a Scout store brought back a lot of good memories.

Mike - Nope, not armed forces, I'm just a guy who married an Italian and wound up living in Italy. Thanks for the Hotspark offer. Bagheera's ferro rods should arrive next week; I'll try 'em out and then let you know.
