Hey sarge.

We carry the 1/8 inch rods but some of the guys on our forum... in the Hoodlums "for sale" section order them in bulk from time to time and get them wholesale. It is an excellent deal. You can post there and if anyone has any rods you can get them cheaper.

Just go to our site at www.survival.com and then click on forums. signup is painless and you are on your way.

Thanks, HooDoo. Great site. A tad expensive though. I got a 3/8" solitare now, I dropped my MFS about an hour ago and the ferro rod popped right out. I trimmed it and a length of hacksaw blade down to 2.4" with a Dremel tool (quite a light show I might add) and tucked it in with my Spark-Lite and Quik-Fire tabs. That made quite a nice firestarting kit.

I cut the Ferrocerium in water. It might save your garage.

One thing you may or may not know is that if your very carefully and slowly scrape some of the stuff off as a powder, it burns hot and fast like magnesium and will light reluctant tinder. Also... you don't need to scrape with steel... You can strike it with broken glass etc. Anything that moves fast, is hard and has an edge can be made to throw a spark with the rods.

Have any of you used ferrocerium in extremely cold weather ? Or to put it another way, is there a lower temperature known to you that the substance may not ignite under...say 5-10 below zero? I have never tried to use it at those extremes and would hate to experiment on the loosing side.

That's a good question FF. I was wondering the same thing myself.

I played with my ferrocerium down to 23 below this winter ... no problems for me.
If you're interested, I have some 1/2" by 4" rods ... email me.

No matter what you do, some things won't work out.

Worry about those things that you can make a difference with.

I've used ferro rods in temps down to -10 /
-15F, with no problems. I've never had any luck at all with magnesium. I prefer quik-fire tinder tabs that come with a spark-lite or vaseline impregnated dryer lint with shredded 0000 steel wool for tinder. I recently tried some maya wood sent to me by Bagheera and that seems to work exceptionally well, although it's somewhat harder to carry.

I also have been looking around for some "bulk" rods. Does anyone know of a wholesaler? Is it very expensive to buy it like that?

Hi All,
Back when these things were all called "metal matches" (circa '65), I used 'em to light fires in -40's F. But you need really good tinder.

The best little rods I have seen are sold at all Boy Scout Supply stores. They are about 2" long with a key type handle. They cost only $2 and the lttle key type hande makes them the a breeze to hold and use.

Try:
Doan Machinery & Equipment

This is the company that makes the magnesium block with the striker on the edge. They might sell you just some of the rods.
