I've just bought a kershaw boa knife. I had a black one but I always dreamed about colored handle/satin blade one ;) Everything would be great unless...
I'm a little disappointed about that knife.
Blade has a hand made hollow grind which is a little incorrectly made (it isn't symmetrical on both sides and false edge isn't symmetrical either). My question is: have those blades been ground by hand? Who's done it? Maybe I've got some after-market reground blade or something? Give me some historitical facts please :) Sorry for my crappy pics ;)

Brad or Dave will be along shortly to answer your questions im sure, but also, you might want to watch the language. the MODs here don't take kindly to it. im not threatening or anything, just speaking from experience.

Hey bad carm,

Welcome to the forums!

Here's a little info on your 1580MC:

They were made from late 2001 thru 2003. There were 394 pieces released. The 1580MCST (partially serrated) was made in 2002 only. There were 311 pieces of the MCST released. They were discontinued, unfortunately, due to lack of sales.

In looking at your pics, it appears you do have the factory grind on it. I'm not sure if it was a hand grind or machine grind. I checked mine, and the grind looks 99% identical. Closer pics of the edge could confirm the remaining 1%. I know mine still has the factory grind on it.

What is the Born On Date of yours? They're fairly rare pieces. I'm sure if you wanted to dispose of it, someone would probably make you an offer! :D

Thank you a lot for your reply!
So is your knife hollow ground also? Blade bevel is about 1-2mm higher on one side than the other in my knife but otherwise the knife is perfect. I had read an article in some military magazine about this knife years ago (that article was about International Knife Award at IWA in Norymberg) and then I decided that I'll get this knife in the future. Now, 7 years later I've got it and I'm realy happy :) I've found informations that there were run of first 50 knives in 2000 which had different handle colors (dark-pink one instead of purple in later version) and kershaw logo situated in other place as on the following picture:

Interesting info on the dark pink, the award and the article. I'd love to find a copy of it. Did you find the Born On Date? It will tell you the month and year of manufacture. It's located on the blade opposite the thumb stud. You have to close the knife just a little, and look right up against the the handle at the pivot. Mine is really hard to read, as it's just a stamp...not color etched like current Kershaws.

Great score! If ya got it off the bay, I was bidding against you. I'm glad I know it went to a good home. Enjoy it!

Here's a link to Kershaw's history. It lists the 2000 IWA Knife of the Year award as the Boa!

It probably won't satisfied you because this article is in polish :) But there are some realy nice pics of one of first 50 boa knife. Again: sorry for low resolution pics...
I've found this born date indication (!) and it' 0901 (If I'm correctly it means august 2001 ) and looks laser-etched for me. If we're talking about an auction here on the BF ~2weeks ago you're right - this precious found real good home :)
In this article there was some photos of Ricochet knife which is now my second kershaw-holy-grail (the first one is of course earlier version of this boa knife ;)) Have you got any infos/photos of this spectacular knife? I've found just few photos on the net. It had been made (around 2000) of CPM440V hardened to 55-57HRC. Blade lenght is 82mm, thickness: 3mm and overall lenght is 192 mm. It has got polished G10 scales which look really GREAT:eek: I can't wait to get it in my hands (I hope it won't last next 7 years ;))

Here are the photos:

Thanks for the info. Hang on to that article...stuff like this is hard to find!

Your blade date of 0901 would mean September 2001. You have a very early one in the run.

As for the Ricochet, I don't have one, but I'm sure Thomas W, Kershawguy, Oregonedge or one of the others can answer your questions.

Hang around, this is a great place!

09 is september, of course, I've counted incorrectly ;) Waiting for someone who's able to give me some info about Ricochet knife...

I don't have the Ricochet, but I have a Random Task. It was the first
collaboration between Kershaw and Ken Onion. It was put into production
in 1998. The Ricochet is basically the same knife with a different blade shape.
Both have titanium liners, titanium pocket clip and CPM440V(S60V) blade steel.
If you have the opportunity to get either, I would jump on it like white on rice.

Sorry for the bad pics...one is a scan job and the other was taken with
my cell phone.
