Hello

Ive recently purchased a full size, black ka-bar straight edge. This being my first carbon steel knife, i'd like some advice from people who own the same knife or something similar.

- Does the black epoxy coating prevent disoloration of the knife
- Will sharpening this knife damage the black epoxy coating?
- By purchasing a glass nylon sheath, does this allow me to store the knife in the sheath without pots forming (as ive read that leather sheaths form pots)
- If not in constant use, how should I store the knife, and how often should I clean it? Suggestions as to how to clean the knife, and what to clean it with are most welcome

Thanks for your help

Hi Carbonsteel, welcome to Bladeforums. Ok, to answer your questions, I have a couple of Kabars and in my experience:
  • The epoxy coating will protect the flats of the knife, but the edge will rust if you don't take care of it.
  • Sharpening just the edge shouldn't damage the coating excessively, but that all depends on the angle your using.
  • As long as it's not wet, or covered by something corrosive, yes.
  • Put a light coat of oil (non-organic) and put it in a shoebox, drawer, safe, etc...
Hope that helps.

Don't store it in the sheath. You can clean it by just wiping it down, or using it and then wiping it down.
