Few questions about slipjoint parts.

I am considering working an a couple of using slipjoint folders for myself this year. Could anyone give me some advice or opinion regarding the following questions ...

1) Could the steel of the backspring be the same as the blade steel, eg.- ATS34 with ATS34 blade (or likewise 440C or even 1095 / O1 carbon steels). I thought it would make sense if cutting from the same thickness steel.

2) If using an eg.- ATS34 backspring, what sort of hardness should I ask from the heat treater ? Same hardness as blade - will that work ? Or spring tempered ?

3) I wanted to use some 410SS liners. Do the liners need to be HT-ed to work on a slipjoint ?

4) Anyone got ideas whether stainless against stainless contact points would result in galling. (eg.- ATS34 blade against 410SS liners, or ATS34 blade against ATS34 backspring...)

Sorry for the multiple questions. Many thanks in advance for any knowledge you guys out there can provide me. Cheers. Jason.

:) I've made a few single blade slip joints and always used the same steel for the backspring and blade. The backspring needs to be spring tempered otherwise it would most likely break. You should be able to use the 410SS for liners without heat treating with no problem. Galling should not be a problem as long as the contact points are finished smooth. I'm certainly not an authority, but hope this helps.
