Few Questions about the M-Type

So I'm completely smitten with my Trance, and became kind of interested in the M-type seeing it as a large brother of the Trance. But I have a few questions :D I've usually been carrying my knife in my RBP, but this past week I've been trying carrying my knife clipped to my RFP - was using my Griptillian and Tenacious during this trial period and was just giving up on it because they were too obtrusive and too much of the handle was exposed for my comfort (I like hooking my thumb into my pocket, which usually reveals the clip and exposed handle). Came home on Thursday and my Trance had just arrived in the mail; I was taken aback by how nice it answered everything I was having a problem with! The clip was mounted as high as possible, very thin handle - I was very happy :D However, I typically like to carry a bit longer blade (if I'm going to break the city of Boston's length limit, I might as well do it to my preference ), usually around the 3.5" range.

Now that story time is over, now for a few questions.

1) How thick is the handle? Thicker than the Trance I'd assume?
2) Are the studs wider than the handle (allowing for them to catch on the lip of jeans pockets for deployment upon pulling out like the Trance?)
3) How low on the handle is the pocket clip mounted?
4) Are the only configurations offered satin with PE and black with CE? (seem to be the only ones I can find)
5) How durable is the coating on the black M-types?

Appreciate any answers anyone can give.

1) Only about a mm IIRC. (roughly 7.5 mm vs 8.6 mm)
2) Yes, pretty much all the CLB folders can do this, though the Direkt, having fairly round thumbstuds, doesn't work that well.
3) Tip-down is the lowest-profile, all but 5mm of handle is inside your pocket. Tip-up is more than double that exposed.
4) Yes. And it's not "satin" - it's some type of "Titanium" finish - though I haven't really heard much about it. It works pretty darn well though.
5) It's pretty durable, but you should expect it to come off. It SEEMS to be less durable than the gray finish on the PE version.

Thanks :) Really appreciate the info and specific measurements!

It's unfortunate about the tip up clip mount :( Kind of hurts #2

Found a decent youtube video which shows the lock side of the knife. I really want to pull the trigger on this but the tip up clip position is just irking me :( I think the Trance has spoiled me now. My kingdom for a M-type with a higher mounted tip up clip, or an extended clip which travels further upwards before it doubles over!

Aloha Lock1454,

Welcome to the madness, and MAHALO senoBDEC for the "back up"...I been super busy as always it seems, but more than usual as of late.:o

Appreciate your interest in the M-TYPE Lock1454...it just got rave reviews in Tactical Knives as well as in the recent BLADE magazine. Ride height in tip up ain't too bad...

I betcha Maarten could post a pic of his in pocket for ya...;)

God bless and mahalo!

Sweet "M-porn" Chad!

As was said, the ride height isn't too bad on the clip and tight making it ultra-secure. Personally though, I'd like a double finger-recessed clip (like on BM's Vex) for better ergo's and deployment.

Frankly the difference is only a few mm FWIW. Besides, IMO, it carries better tip-down (most larger folders do). If low-carry and being nigh-undetectable besides the clip is your thing - try the Hyper. Demon little cutter, very light, and carries very deep tip-up or tip-down.

I used to not really care about the carry depth of my knives, but as I said I've recently switched to carrying my knife clipped into my FRP and I tend to hook my thumbs onto the corner of my pockets. So I've really been digging the Trance as it's extremely thin and it pretty much disappears into the pocket (have been carrying it every day since I got it, really enjoying it). And I kind of like carrying the Trance (and the Mtype too if I get it) as tip up for the wave-like thumb studs. Technically illegal to carry a waved knife in my parts, but in the slight chance I were to run into a LEO, they'd be hard pressed to tell that the studs could deploy the blade when being pulled from the pocket.

I'll probably pick up an M Type somewhere along the line, it's just not quite as high as it would have been if it had a clip like the Trance :(

Also, the Hyper seems like a weird cross between the Trance and M Type, plus I'm not a big fan of skeletonized handles :)

And Chad, you're quite the trip :D Your posts just exude energy and :) :) :)
