Few random thoughts

Well, I have been sick as a dog for a few days, so I have had planty time to think of random things. One of them is as follows......

Since joining this site I have had close to 50 blades pass through my hands trying to find the right ones for my needs. About 30 were from Busse Combat, few were production blades, and the rest were customs. All the Busse knives are gone, I seem to be going for the thinner blades now. All productions are gone with the exception of my RAT knives. I also have a handfull of customs left.

I could have saved a lot of money if I found RAT Cutlery sooner though. As much as I still enjoy my custom knives, my RAT blades will do everything I ever need. I would have no problem trusting my life, and my family's life on these knives. The warranty is great, they are a tested design by myself and many others, and they are comfortable to use on long hard days. You can't ask for much more.

I do like 01 tool steel, A2, and CPM3V. Lets be honest though, what have you come up against that you said "hell, can't do that, its only 1095, better not". These knives will do it all and ask for more. Like I said, just wished I found them sooner.

Enough rambling, my meds are kicking in again. Thanks for all who helped me down the right paths. I know most here are knife nuts, and want to own one of about everything, just realize you may NEED them once you have a few from this company. They will take care of you.

been thinking about my stash of blades, I may need to go thru my box of knifes and clean house. maybe I will hand some to friends or use some for pass arounds!

good post, stay on your meds and "get well soon"

I agree with you man. I have had alot of knives and rat just fills every need and at a great price.

The only thing I can think of is not really specific to 1095, but rather all high carbon steels. High carbon steels can not be used in diving knives.

Other then that - I will prefer high carbon to any stainless, and 1095 is very underestimated (outside of the RAT world :) ) steel in my view.

Joe Fowler, fixed it brother. Didnt have any good Rat pictures, so I put up a group shot of my Laconico's.

I will always believe RATs to be my preferred brand of production, however, I believe with all of the knives out there, I cannot just stop at them. There is simply to many sweet designs.

I have come to a similar conclusion. I came to BF because I found Busse knives. While Busse makes some very nice knives (I bought a Sar 5 ) I just can't see myself using it. It is handle heavy, although balances nicely in hand. I have come to realize that I don't want to have a couple of knives that I use and a bunch of them that I admire.

So with all that said, I love my Rats. I have no concerns over using them to death and they are priced so I can have a few them for the different packs and roles I need, plus if I destroy one I can send it in and get it replaced. I am slowly thinning out the more expensive knives that are getting dusty on my shelf.

It's nice to find a knife that will fill the roles you have for it, and a community that shares your passion for sharp pointy things with teeth:D

I was thinking along the same lines this morning. I love big huge knives as well as small one, but it is rare that I have the opportunity to carry something big. So as much as I like to buy the big boys, I probably have way more then I could ever use anyhow. I have tried to carry small fixed blades, but they are never comfortable, and the folders are not as easy to access.

In my quest for a carry fixed blade I have found two that fit the bill nicely, the BK11, and the Izula. I can carry them Horizontal on my belt with no issues. I give the edge to the Izula for several reasons which I will not bore you with. I still have a hunger for more steel, and find myself looking at the neat neck knives like the hellion, the new Bravo, the Little Bird, the Wolf Pup.....but I would be spending a lot of money on something that I am confident would not displace my Izula as my prefered carry. The Izula has it all....

I believe if all you had was an Izula and a $6 Tramontina...or the new Rat Machete....there is nothing you could not do that requried a sharp edged tool.

Enough of my rambling, and I hope you get feeling better.

sounds more to me like, you relearned what "want" and "need" are. If you knew that early on, you wouldn't have started with 30 of those very impressive blades, and later determined something much smaller and much cheaper accells at just about everything under the sun too, just in a different way than the larger stuff. :D

I too have been through a pile and TBH the only ones i uses on a regular basis are my SAK and my Izula - and maybe a custom friction folder I own

have just picked up a BR PSK but thats probably only passing through LOL

I hear ya. Now I haven't went through all the knives and money some have but I share the feeling.

I always wanted a Chris Reeve Sebenza. Finally got one. Carried for almost a year but was scared to use it or lose it. Answer = Sell it and buy a RC-5 & RC-6.

I always wanted a Bob Dozier knife. Bought one a couple of years ago at SHOT. I've use it. It'll probably go up for sale next.

Long live RAT!

I also have a ton of knives. The ones I use the most are my SAKs',Izula,RC6,and my BK9.With those knives I could get by quite well.

I am in the same boat as dbltap45 we are best friends and he got me into knives oh id say a little over a year ago, i to have way to many blades to use but no one seems to want to trade or buy the knives i want to get rid of i thought about maybe giving them to a good cause like adopt a soilder or something, he also got me into custom knives this year, but out of them all i still LOVE rat have almost all of them expect an rc 3 and rc 4. i just recently just got into the less is more philosiphy i think that this is just a much more practical way of thinking for myself, plus i have been reading this book by nesmuk hope i spelled it right and this guy did everything with 3 tools.

ps dbltap i miss you brother i PROMISE i will be home soon so we can continue our bushcraft jurnoys together, not quite the same with out you there with me. i mean that in the most hetero sexual way :)
