First of all, Im feeling like a dork to ask but I'll ask to make sure: what is the small pit in the handle for? Does it have a function or is it just a design thing?

Second.. call me weird, but I love that smell on of the handle. :D
At first, I thought it was too strong but I've grown to like it. It's very pleasant. :o

Thanks for your time!

The "pit" is for a bow drill. It is a method for creating fire with friction. There are a lot of videos on utube, just search bow drill. You should be able to figure it out from there; the "pit" on the knife is only one small part of the bow drill system.

The divot in the handle is for starting fires with a bow drill.
I never noticed a smell on my RC-5. Until recently I was a heavy smoker though.
Congrats on a great knife!

haha.. no worries man...:) the hole/indention in the handle is so the knife can be used as a socket, for a bow drill(during fire by friction)..

i don't have one, so i don't know what the smell is all about, but that made me laugh...:D my wife and my younger son are fanatical smellers....:o they're always telling each other "eeewww this stinks, smell it.."

edit--- i guess i'm a slow typer... many folks beat me to a response...

Whenever something smells bad in my house the person who smelled it ALWAYS asks me to smell it. (Mainly because I smell everything in great detail)

Never been asked to taste anything, though.

You know, I thought it would be a pivot for the drill!
I sniff all kinds of stuff, also on knives. :D
I also easily smell the micarta in my hands after just handling the knife.

Thanks for the answers guys!
