I have always been a two or three knife edc type of guy, I still am, but I am starting to cut down (pun intended) on my edc. I no longer carry a minimag, multitool(gerber pliers), pocket cutter (case medium stockman), and then whatever i felt like fondling that day. now its a streamlight stylus pro, just my case stockman or queen gunstock, and thats it.
well, i bought my first tacticool knife in awhile, a Boker Kalashnikov automat 74.
I have owned a few decent blades before, spyderco endura, several kershaws, and a couple others to boot, but I have decided I am settling down a little bit and I am just gonna carry this Kalashnikov for a little while, flying solo i think. it is made of AUS 8, which has a bad rep around here, and isn't necessarily known for great edge retention. But, I do think I can settle down with just one knife. (minus the spyderco bug on my keychain) I haven't set any limits to myself, i dont care about size/weight, none of that is an issue, but one question, does anyone have any prior experience with this knife?
My case stockman is a superslicer in my book, the queen is also a work horse, (I love d2 now), just seems like a knife like this has more to break and wear down. and I have own chinese autos before, they usually break within a couple weeks or so of fair use. (cutting stringline, shingles, siding, and whatever else comes up during the day.) Who knows, I might go pick me up another edc this weekend.
I have owned this knife for about a week and it doesn't really seem to hold that super edge for more than a few cuts, then it goes from hair popping to hair shaving or maybe removing a couple hairs each pass. but it gets hair popping with a couple passes over a glass window or stropping on my boot.
anyways, just felt like getting my thoughts down in a post.
couple questions before i get off, the better half is calling for bed.
do you guys think the Kalashnikov is a good edc? since boker has outsourced to tiawan with a couple knives, are they still up to spec for boker, or has the quality dropped? and im thinking about dropping a dime on buck110 with a bg42 blade. (or maybe getting a cheap edc to beat up for a little while)
thank you for reading! have a good night!
