So the Sage FFBM arrived today. Whoa. Sweet knife. Pics to come (card reader issues). I immediately took her out in the woods for pics and chopping. She chops pretty dang good.

But that handle was rough as hell. So back up to the shop for some time with a file and sandpaper. After ~40 minutes, shes smooth as a baby's butt, and sculpted to my hand. More chopping. Aaaah. Comfortable.

I'll post pics monday morning in this thread.

Now, how am I going to sheath this bad boy. I've got some tan kydex, and some brown too. Black isn't going to work. And I've got leather. I'm going to want it malice strapped onto my Maxpedition daypack. I'm just at the point of holding it and thinking right now. Leather might be too heavy. Kydex might be hard to setup for malice straps. Hmmm.

Gonna have to rework the edge a bit. I'm trying to decide about stripping it. I'm trying not to have to do that. I'd much prefer to not. I talked to Soupy and aparantly its not hard to redo the flared tubing. And I already have the 1/4" ss tube. But I'd still rather not do all that blade sanding.:thumbdn:

Man, I wish the card reader was working. The good one is at work.

you may not have to do much sanding. seems the newer models, once stripped, have a finish similar to a bead blast. there have been quite a few that needed little to no sanding and still look good.

congrats on the score!

A fine choice, Andy.

With your modding skills , I'm sure it will turn out great.

The FFBM is a superb design.

The FFBM is a great knife. Congrats!
I'll check back on monday (sure want to see this one in action)...

With Monday so far and memory so gone, somebody hook a Hog up so I can see these pics :foot:  Great choice, I love them  Congrats :D

OK here are some pics from before modding the handle.

Handles. This handle was rough to chop with. I chopped through a 6" dia oak log with it and man, I needed gloves.

With some of my other big coppers:

Look at those spines!!

After modding that handle up I chopped through the log again. Much better. I think the knife would feel better with some canvas mikarta on there. I may switch that out. I may not. This stuff is pretty.

I started a leather sheath. Lined even. With some nice soft Hogskin!

More detail on the spines. Left to right: HI Bolo, FFBM, HI Samsher, Tora Khuk, and the elusive Bonecutter khuk.

A better edited shot of the spines of the FFBM and the HI Bolo. (That HI bolo is a beast.)

I wonder what the tang looks like on those bolos (under the guard) and if they're stronger than the FFBM or not, despite the width of the spine.

The FFBM is a Brute! She seems to fit in nicely with your other monster choppers :D

Check out the pictorial links on Tyrkon's website. You should be able to find Wicked's and Randucci's tube flaring tutorial. It is quite simple to redo if you choose to strip the knife.

I am pretty sure your FFBM will have dimples. Most all of the flats of the CG stuff have dimples. There are very few exceptions like the thinner stock saber ground Zero Tolerance series, BIBB, STripper, etc.. I think it was because they came from blanks that were accidently surface ground to 3/16.

I happen to know exactly what the tang looks like on this one (pic below), because I put that handle on it. Its a fat rat tail tang. The FFBM being full tang is certainly stronger. And actually, they have a similar feel in the hand, weight wise. I think this is due to the width (edge to spine) of the FFBM. Its much wider than the Bolo.

This pic was of the pieces after I removed the old handle.
