I'm new to Busse so I'm a little confused about the FFBM's grind. I've only seen pics but is some it looks to be a flat grind like the FBMLE and in others it looks to be a saber grind. Is this just the pics or are there different grinds on the FFBM? I've also seen it referred to as a FFFBM Fat Flat Fusion Battle Mistress. Is that a different version? Thanks.

FBLE has a full height grind but the FFBM has a sabre grind.

I think the FBM SE's typically have full height grinds as well.

the 2008 FBMSE has a full height grind.....

the 2007 FBMSE has a sabre grind.....

The FFBM and the FFFBM are one and the same.
All (F)FFBMs are saber ground, and its probably just not showing up in some of the pics.
LEs are full height, and the CGs have the Corrugated Bevel Technology.

as for the SE (Special Edition) FBMs... the 2007s have a saber, the 2008s have a full height.

Lemme add to your confusion a bit... Some FFFBM's also have what is known as a 'penetrator tip', (kinda like a tip swedge, angled in to meet at the tip, about a half inch long +/- and increases the ability somewhat for a thick spined knife tip to penetrate) others do not. Seems to be most common on the OD green version, but I've heard of a few being on the sage, and maybe some of the black FFFBM's too.

Some people have taken FFBM's and made them in to full flat or even full convex grinds.

After that the warranty is gone but if it's done right it won't break.

There are a hand full of Sage with the penetrator tip. ;)

To add more to the finer details. :D

There are three (or four) different variations on the tips / clip points of the FFBMs...
Penetrator tip, flat, and beveled. Skunker mentioned there being four different
kinds... but I've never heard of, or have seen the 4th.

Also... some of the SEs have beveled clips, and some have flat.

In case you were wondering, the SEs are .27" thick blades versus the .25" CGs and the .31" FFBMs

Are ya dizzy yet??? :D :D

.

I recently sold three FFBMs on the exchange, one had a flat spine, one was beveled and the third had the penetrator tip. They all came from the same order at the BCS.

I'd love to know what the fourth is...

I wanted a full flat grind and .31" so I guess that only leaves the FBM LE. Is that correct? I hope not because if so I don't know what to do. I like the LE but I can't bring myself to spend that much money when it's going to be a user. If I was collecting it I could justify it. Thanks guys!

perhaps convex beveled, as apposed to flat beveled?

Correct.

The FBM LEs are the only full height ground blades...
but they are just a little thicker at .32"

Edit to add: The 2008 Special Editions are also full height grind at .270" thick
and are probably a little more $$$ than the LE retail price... maybe $797???

You could always get a (F)FFBM and have it re-ground to full height
by the Busse custom shop, Ban, or Bill Seigle...
But I think by the time its all done, it would end up costing about the same as an LE.

If it were me... I'd pony up the $$$ for the LE.
You won't regret it... They are the best of the fatties IMHO.

Honestly... I don't think there is a 4th.
I think Stinky was just drunk again. :D

Anybody know what the tips / clip points look like on the
black w/ black & red G-10s and/or the sage with canvas micarta FFBMs???

Or... Stinky... what's the 4th variation???

the fbmle that I had had a rounded bevel that ran to the tip, like really rounded...

1: standard with nothing done to it, as seen in the pic
2: penetrator tip only
3: flat beveled
4: flat bevleled + penetrator tip
5: rounded/convex beveled, as seen in pic

?

#1. is what I consider a FLAT clip point

#2. Penetrator tip

#3. beveled... where the edges of the (clip point) flat have been beveled all the way to the tip

#4. ??? - IMHO, the bevel going all the way to the tip automatically give you
a penetrator tip (or equivalent there of). yes???

#5. The only rounded over clip point I've ever seen is on the WASP SHBM, and
was specifically requested by Tom W after it's first outing.

The LE in your pic looks like a standard bevel to me.

Edited to add pics of the WASP...

Maybe the slight rounding on yours is from their final buff/de-burring on a 600 grit slack belt???

the sabre grind will make you better looking and more popular with the ladies.

Jerry just mentioned an NMFBM. You might want to wait and find out what that is.

Also, I've seen one FFBM with a very high sabre grind, it almost splits the difference between the regular FFBM sabre grind and full flat. It would be very hard to find one of those but you might get lucky.

 :D

As you can see from Lil' Foo's pics, the FFBM's saber grind isn't exactly a very low one. It's quite near a full height flat grind. Love the FFBM. Most fantastic big knife I've ever owned.

Lil' Foo your knife is da sh!t!!! That's the look I love. Anyway I got some thinking to do because I find with thick saber's they have more of a tendency to get jammed when chopping splits compared to flat grinds. Now I have to decide if I'm going to get a FFBM or another custom ranger made in 5160. Oh what is the length of the FFBM's sharpened edge and also from the tip to the front of the scales? Thanks.
