I'm using a FFBM to carve a spoon just to show that it can be done.

I used the FFBM to split the round, hog off material, and even the shaping of the handle and bowl.

I will use a hook knife to carve the inside of the bowl when it's time but I'll wait for that until I make sure I don't screw up the blank.

Oh yeah, this is well-seasoned wood so there's no risk of cracking, checking, or splitting--just the risk of a poorly-placed chop that takes off the handle or a big chunk of the bowl. :D

I am doing a totem and use a CGFBM but the knife is a bit too heavy and threw my elbow out. Maybe I'm using too heavy of a mallet as well. (or maybe I'm getting old!!)These knives cut quite well and seem to keep their hone just fine. Use a gouge on the bowl of the spoon. The only problem is that gouges are tough to sharpen. Cheers, Alex.

Cool pics, I did this spoon and chopsticks last summer with my CGFBM, I found it easier to stab the tip of the FBM into a large stump or log then move the spoon against the blade to get that initial spoonish shape. The hard part is digging/drilling out the spoon...the tip on any FBM is quite robust and not perfectly suited for fine drilling.

Robust! :D Just a little. :cool:

Those look great. You carved the bowl on your spoon with the FBM?! You're a maniac! I'm going to use a hook knife for that part.

Those chopsticks look like they'd work just fine. Plus you could smooth out the inside of the bowl with a hot coal and a blower if you wanted to.
:thumbup:

Definately that spoon needs some work. The red coal thing works great. I did a huge morter and pestle out of a log. I put some red coals on the end of the log and kept pouring water out of a teapot around the rim so as not to burn too much. It worked like a charm. I can't put up pictures here because I didn't pay for an upgrade.

Catch us up, Brian! I wanna see what you can do with that big, clumsy knife. Btw...you gonna grab an NMSFNO? I KNOW you want one. :D

I'll try to crank it out this weekend. We've got soccer all day tomorrow but Sunday's looking like a perfect day to Hoosier Out on the front porch with my little FFBM and my "spoon". :)

NMSFNO? I don't know what you're talking about... :cool::cool:

Shh...:D

Alex, if you set up an account on Photobucket, you can paste the IMG links into your posts here, without any upgrade. Read this tutorial, it's a little dated, the screen shots are different now, but the principal is the same
