FFBM vs Dogfather

I have noticed that some FFBMs are listed as .310 thick and others at .320. Are both correct?

Is the Dogfather almost as good a chopper as the FFBM?

What other similar size choppers are out there?

What is the web address for the list of Busse Knives that have been produced over the years?

Is the MOASH at .352 thick the fattest knife in production? What is it's blade length?

The dogfather is a very good chopper, but i think it compares to the CG FBM. It is thick, but I think an FFBM feels heftier, chops better.

That said, I let my FFBM go, because it went over my perceived "weight limit" for carrying hunting or camping. Kept the DF, and bought an FBM.

I have a CG FBM and a CG DF and the FBM is much more massive.

In a head to head chopping competition, with equivalent blade profiles, I would give the FBM the advantage... it swings heavy!

That being said, the DF would be my choice for field use as it is more easily packed/carried and the Res-C is fantastic on a chopper.

The Dogfather is a excellent chopper but it cannot compare against a FFBM because of weight. The FFBM is so massive that hits like a sledge hammer. A better comparison would be a DF vs CGFBM. The performance of these two are very close with a slight edge given to the CGFBM.

The MOASH is about 1" shorter than the FBM.

Other knives to consider in the chopper size range would be Basic 9, BM-e, SHBM, SwampRat BattleRat, and SwampRat Rad Daddy.

Both the DF and the FFBM are excellent choppers but the FFBM chopped better for me. And the weight difference isn't an issue for me. I like them all. :D

Gee Ban, how come you remembered the Rat Daddy? I still have one CG in mint condition, as well as, a Battle Rat and they are both awesome knives! I had forgotten I had the Rat Daddy until you brought it up. It is a pity that they are not offered any more.

I agree I would love to see the swamp kick out a Rat Daddy, I love huge choppers.

Chopping ability has a great deal to do with the person chopping. For those with the benefit of a stout constitution and a good eye, there would be a constellation of chips in short order. That being said, the FFBM is a heck of a cutter/chopper and has a great deal of heft. Naturally, everyone has their 'best chopper' opinion even long after the jostling in the wood pile has given way to utter boredom.

In comparing the two, they are both brilliant choppers with a smaller margin of performance variance than most are willing to admit. Is the DF almost as good a chopper as the FFMB? After clasping both knives and using them heartily, tarnishing the blades, befouling them in mud and grime, digging in rocky soil, prying old lumber asunder and doing double duty where only an axe should tread, they both remain defiant.

I do notice greater strain in the distal segment of the carpus following a session with the hard-handled Busse offering.

I have no idea why I remembered the RatDaddy. I have never handled one and nor do I own one. I just remember seeing a pic of it and thinking "Man, that one should be a helluva chopper!".

Stubai,

Yes, the respirence-C handles are definitely more comfortable and transfer less shock to the hands than the full tang g10/micarta handles. They are also lighter weight and more forward balance than similar sized full tang knives. I would love it if Busse came back out with a Basic 9 or something similar in size.

I have found with the G-10/Micarta grips alot of it has to do with how well it fits my hands. With some minor sanding to the Mag handles my CGFBM chopped MUCH more comfortably. It was not really an issue before until long stints of chopping, with some "hot spots" removed it quickly became my favorite.

I also noticed that taking my CGFBM to a convex edge lead to have much better bite that is one thing that has not been done to the DF...but soon will.

Ban: I second the notion of bringing back the Basic-9. It is my 'go to' knife for many of my treks in the wilderness and has been a constant, reliable companion in time of need. As I've said before, it has the optimal heft and blade length combined with a perfect ergo grip.

Aside for a new release of the Rat Daddy, my vote is with the Resiprene-C. Fantastic material! I truly wish Busse (and yes, Swamp Rat as well) use it again !

Maybe Dan will find some INFI lying around somewhere that he can make some more knives out of and slap some Res-C on it. I think it would be cool to see Jerry make another knife in Res-C.
