Sorry if this has been discused before, but I just got a Delica plain blade thinking that it was going to be FFG but it was the Sabre grind. Is one better than the other? Thanks.

they are both fine, the FFG will be a better slicer than the saber grind. right now only the 5 new colors are the FFG blades.

FFG slices better, you can tell the difference for instance in opening the mail. But the Sabre grind is tougher if you are hard on your knives. The FFG Delica is kind of thin if you treat your knives like screwdrivers.

I like my folders to slice well. I'll take a thicker grind on a fixed blade. Full flat grind would be my preference on the Endura or Delica.

I thought the sabre would slice better, and the FFG would be a tougher blade. Im wrong?

I have a sabre grind Delica in the garage for general utility use. It's been good for all kinds of jobs around the house. I did smooth out the edge between the blade flat and the top of the primary bevel. That followed up with some polishing made the knife much better slicer than before. Now it cuts through cardboard and boxes as easily as a dedicated boxcutter.

It depends on what you use your knives for. If you use your knives hard, you would probably be happier with the saber grind, as it's much more robust. For light duty, the nod definitely goes to the FFG- its geometry is extremely efficient. FWIW, I own 8 Delicas (with one more on the way) and the new FFG/FRN version is my favorite.

The FFG Delicas can be used hard, I've done some robust cutting with mine, including carving osage orange (which is like carving solid iron ) and it has held up just fine. Just don't pry with the thing.

you have it backwards.

it's easy to thin the sabre grind on a diamond stone or other coarse stone if you decide it's too thick.

I'm seeing more and more people just swearing that they are having better knife performance using flat grinds. However I've used many of Spyderco's hollow grind blades and have had superb performance from them as well as I've had from the flat grind blades.

I know when it comes to fixed blades I tend to gravitate toward flat grind blades. Albeit I'm more of a blade steel aficionado that I am picky about which grind it is. Because truly I think ZDP-189 would be good on just about any knife design.

That's one reason I'm constantly screaming for Spyderco to bring back some of their past great models in the newer, more exotic blade steels.

My favorite Spyderco kitchen knives are all flat grinds for whatever that's worth. It seems like more and more of Spyderco's in house designs are flat grinds for whatever that's worth>> and I think it's worth taking notice.

OK....Im totally confused right now. I called Spyderco to see what they call the blade and they said it was a hollow grind not a Sabre grind?! Are they the same? Mine has a line half way down the blade and tapers from that point to the edge.

Someone out there has to know if the delica 4 that I have is a hollow or sabre grind edge.

Both. It's a hollow sabre grind. hollow means the grind is concave, and sabre means the grind only goes partway up the blade. Since full hollow grinds are rare, it will sometimes be referred to as simply hollow grind.

Thank you. I was planning on sending it back for a FFG, but I'll just buy another one! That way I'll have both blade edges and try them out for myself. Thanks everyone!
