i have an old para and its is beat down a far ways how far down can ffg get befor it is junk and is there a way to make it new again
thanks g
i have had this knife a long time and i cant part with it but it just not a sharp or cut as nice as my friends new para you can see the blade is worn down
thanks g

Any chance of pictures? Also, how has it been sharpened until now? Pics would help to see how far along it actually is. It might just need to be thinned a bit to get it cutting again... depending on how it's been sharpened in the past.

The edge on a FFG will get wider every time it's sharpened, but you can still maintain the same inclusive angle and let the edge grow taller.

Nice jumbo perch there! one way to bring back the geometry would be to have it regrind so the primary bevel (the whole left and right side) of the blade from the spine down to the edge.

Right now it has a lot of thickness behind the edge and that's why it doesn't feel as sharp even if the edge is at 15 dps.

Or alternatively, have it sharpen at 10 degrees per side and then do a third bevel instead of micro bevel you put a small visible bevel at 15 degrees per side, this should improve the performance. this will slim down the thickness behind the edge and the knife should slice and cut better. Be prepared that the 10 degree per side bevel will be quite wide, like 1/4 inch wide

Blade does look like it has plenty of life in it... like others have said, you can thin the whole blade, or at least grind in a new bevel at a lower angle.

How has it been sharpened? Nice job of maintaining the blade's profile.

You can sharpen that knife into a toothpick and it will still be sharp. You are doing something wrong, but without knowing what you are doing we can't help.

maybe i turn it into a convex edge ?

I think that's part of the problem... can't totally tell from the picture, but it looks rather convex already. Even if it wasn't and you wanted to, you'd still have to lower the angle... if you tried to convex the existing bevel, it would only get worse.

If you want to thin the whole blade, you can just lay if flat on a stone and 'scrub' it... this will obviously change the finish. (Type 'thinning a knife' into Google, you'll find lots of info.). Or you could send it to someone like Josh at razoredgeknives, and have it reground. But if you're capable of holding a steady angle, or rigged up a jig to do it, if you did little more than set the angle so the stone contacts the top of the shoulder of the bevel, then held that angle until the grind went all the way to the edge on both sides, (then sharpened it) I suspect just doing that, you'd end up with a big improvement in the sharpness. You need to at a minimum lower the angle of what is currently on there.

Put the blade flat on stone,or on belt sander, and thin out the whole blade. After you've thinned out the blade you can put small secondary edge and youre set.

i can get it sharp just not like when it was a newer blade thought i used it or sharpend it to often i have had some problems with a weak edge so i have spent more time learning how to take away the bur on all stones and use light weight to sharpen my other knives always come out screaming sharp just this para is falling behind maybe i am just to much ocd about it and just need to use it some more
thanks all g
