Is there a folding knife as strong as a fixed blade or stronger ? Is that possible ? Thoughts ?

It's impossible. Assuming comparable materials and dimensions, no folder comes close, regardless of design or lock type. End of story.

The strongest "hard use" folders , like the Cold Steel 4Max for example , will survive more abuse than the weakest fixed blades .

(But with comparable thickness, materials , and build quality , fixed will be stronger .)

EDIT : Seems like there's still many here that believe otherwise . I could win a lot of bets with a simple demo ! :p

You would have to specify the fixed blade. I have a wonderful fixed blade in Rex 121 that is super thin and hardened to 70 Rc. My Rukus 610 is much stronger in every way.

Ok..if the dimensions of the fixed blade were identical to the dimensions of the folding knife in the open and lock position

In some cases the blade may fail before the lock...or the pivot.

If you need a strong lock, look at Demko's work.

By and large, I'd prefer a non-folding knife for usage that would test a knife's limits.

Idk.. I’m thinking if you choose a folding knife why shouldn’t it have all the capability of a fixed blade.
Because it doesn't.

(All you can do is approach it...unless you experience failure at the blade before the pivot, handle, lock or other part of the design.)

Popular Knives like K bar have very stout blades with grinds that keep blade thickness

A knife with a stout blade and grind that folds, but when is open approaches or surpasses the strength of a comparable fixed blade knife.

Assuming the fixed blade doesn't snap at the tang, it is highly unlikely, because of how a folding knife is built, that a folder will ever surpass the fixed blade. But it can approach it. How closely? FAFO. Good luck with your testing.

FFK- "Is there a folder as strong as a fixed blade or stronger?"

Bladeforums- "No"

FFK- "I don't believe you".

No offense FFK, I'm just having a little fun, but we've seen this before, MANY times. Someone asks a question, they get an answer from the collective and extensive knowledge of the members here, and then they reject that answer and want to insist the opposite. 😁

Here's the problem with "folder vs. fixed", a folder will always have a hole in the blade, less steel around that hole, and it relies on the strength of even smaller parts like a pivot, blade-stop and screws to maintain structural integrity. The more parts there are, the more opportunity for failure. The blade of a good fixed-blade is typically a piece of solid steel (with some exceptions).

Of course I'm sure there are some folders that are stronger than some fixed-blades, but as others have already said, in general, a fixed will be stronger.

But I'm sure I'm wrong 😁.

I believe you are correct with current folder designs because they are not intended to be as strong as a fixed blade knife
