I just ordered a few of the Cold Steel FGX Skean Dhu polymer knives and was pretty impressed with them. I gave one to my sister and others to various female friends. I also subsequently saw one used on the popular show, "24," with Keifer Sutherland, strictly by coincidence. (It's the one where two agents have Jack's daughter under a sort of captive surveillance. When she discovered it, the female agent produces a Skean Dhu and holds it to Kim's throat and is eventually shot. Anyway, it's a wicked little knife, lightweight and inexpensive. I'm surprised no one's tried to ban it.

I figured the best way to carry it is on a ripcord around the neck or over a shoulder. Some people (cops) carry it for weapon's retention and many women carry it in their purses or up a sleeve in the winter. It also can be taped to the inside of a forearm.

Anyway, just curious as to how many of you have tried these little knives. Also, what of the other FGX knives? I'd like to get one of the tantos. The little Skean Dhus seem to be fairly durable, but I've never tried to break off the point. Has anyone ever tested one of these things to destruction? And for those of you who have them, what do you think of the Skean Dhu and other knives in this series?

re banning them, often times knives like these will still have enough metal mixed in to alert detectors.

wonder if these do?

I don't know. If anyone has a metal detector, that would be one way of checking. If I were a bad guy, I'd simply make my own out of sheet plastic, a saw and a file. Banning them wouldn't stop anyone from making their own. It's just like that metal ring they put on the end. Anyone can take them off. If I were a bad guy wanting to use one for offense, I think I'd put some hilts on mine.

For defense -- things like gun retention, etc., it's fine as is. It would make a very nasty surprise for the bad guys. As for those radical Muslims that hijacked those airliners on 911, they used boxcutters. I'm sure that had those on board known they were going to be flown into buildings that the boxcutters would not have been enough against an entire plane.

In the future, terrorists won't try hijacking planes. Small weapons like boxcutters and homemade weapons just won't work. They're going to go for trying to down the plane somehow, and that's what keeps me awake.

Like hell someone is going to hijack a plane with a polymer knife while I'm on it. I might not have a gun or a knife but I'll have a ballpoint pen and I'll give you a nice blowhole in the back of your neck if you start something on my flight. I hate flying enough as it is, I don't need some nutjob making it any worse.

Hey, there!

So, to get things back on topic.....
Yeah, I have one of these. I got mine to check out the hype of the series from CS. Sorry to say, but I was disappointed.
I put mine through a few layers of cardboard and bent the tip to hades and back...just from cardboard. Since the polymer used (grivory, is it?) is so fibrous I would expect resilience...instead what I found was that a bend in it, like with any plastic, is pretty well a done deal. Luckily, though, it's also soft and after a bit of sanding I had a nice point again.
I got mine when they first come out. Here's to hoping mine's a lemon or that they've refined the materials since then.

Take care!

I have a bunch of the Nightshade series items. I don't think they were meant for long term repetitive use. I see them as a last-ditch one time use item.

I've had one for years , with no serrations though.

I wouldnt try to put it thru anything substantial but I'm sure it could do it intended job with ease, if needed.

I do not think anything should be banned.

Wait.. Which season is this??

Seasons don't matter on a knife like this. It's super-light. In winters, you can wear a rip cord. Just pulling it will break the cord and leave you with the knife ready to use. In the summer it can go in fanny packs or be taped to everyday items or hung around the neck. And of course it can be a boot knife or taped to the top of a hat.

The Skean Dhu has serrations and a very nice point. It beats most boot and neck knives I've seen in a number of areas. It's extraordinarily resilient as well. In fact, it can be worn during all seasons of the year.
