I got a gransfors scandanvian forest axe, and I put some fiberglass right below the head of it, to protect it just in case I hit there. Anybody else do that or think that it is a good/bad idea? I've never used fiber glass before and it added some weight to the handle and isn't dry yet.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I had not thought of using fiberglass. I have seen thick rubber sleeves that slide up to the head. I could have used one of those before my brother started swinging my axe. Before he started swinging I said to be careful, he said "I Won't Break It", he cracked the handle below the head on his second swing

Some time back I asked the same about protecting the haft and was told by
Two Hawks about natures fiberglass as he called it wet rawhide when dry give a good coat of varnish great stuff been doing it ever since works for me

Maybe 15 years ago I put rifle stock bedding compound on the haft (just below the head) of a 3.5 lb axe that I and others use quite a bit becuz it had some damage. Eventually, with more misuse, the compound has begun to chip away - but It has lasted a good long time and does protect the haft.
