Fiction Heroes is the correct title, as I am looking for fictional protagonists who are prepared with effective tools when needed.
My first nomination is Jesse Stone, the police chief of Paradise MA, in "Fool Me Twice" (2012) by Michael Brandman - a continuation of the series begun by Robert B. Parker. Chief Jesse Stone, who was a Los Angeles police officer before relocating to the small seaside town of Paradise, witnesses an auto accident and pulls out his Leatherman tool to deflate an air bag in order to extricate the driver. Chief Stone deserves credit for handling the incident himself and for having his own multi-tool available.
Michael Brandman seems to be continuing the Jesse Stone character and improving the set of tools carried by a hands-on police chief. Good job showing a fictional protagonist prepared for emergencies. While Jesse Stone does not share MacGyver's dislike of firearms, he does seem to be equally well prepared.
